Got a call from my mom last night saying my sister's focus broke down and was at their shop on Orr rd. They seem to have a good reputation but I am not very happy about what I was told. My mom said they told her it had no compression on #4 and quoted her $5500 to replace the engine. I called this morning to make sure she was all paid up with them. I was told the same thing, no compression on 4. I was working and didn't really care to have a conversation about it so I told the guy I was sending a wrecker for it. He seems very surprised and tells me he was under the impression she was selling it to one of the techs. Now, my sister is an idiot. I've known that for a long time. But their business practices seem very sketchy to me. The car is at my house now and hopefully tomorrow I'll have a chance to figure out what's wrong with the car and report back.

How would the cool, calm, and collective minds on the board feel?

I've never heard of them, but my first impression is that she's probably being taken advantage of because she's female and likely doesn't exude a lot of confident car knowledge. Happens to guys too, but women are more easily targeted. Nothing new or earth shattering obviously.

I doubt the tech is wanting to buy it unless there is a cheap and easy fix, or he can do a cheap swap with a used engine and then flip it. That always raises flags unless you know that there's something wrong that is definitely going to cost close/more than the car is worth. The tech doesn't want it if it's not worth his time and effort to make some money off of it.

If you can diagnose it and then don't feel like it's worth fixing, see if the tech still wants it.

Until money has changed hands, no one is selling anything to anyone.

Sorry, what was the question again? :p

Can't find much online about them except Google reviews. I've never heard of them, but that does sound pretty damn shady if he was that eager to buy a car with such a "big" problem.
