anyone out there who could offer a rookie some advice on getting my 1983 johnson 25hp running. it was running great. we drained fuel out of it/tank. stored it less than a year. put fresh fuel in today. wouldn't start (obviously didn't get all of the old fuel out). so today I rebuilt the carb (quickly -- put in most pieces). sprayed it with carb/choke cleaner. it looks clean. didn't soak it overnight. it fires up great -- for 2-3 secs. all connections seem new/good. is it the fuel pump? where to next? if I can't figure it out is there anyone around who services these things reasonably? thanks!!!

it sounds like fuel. it could be the pump. you can try keeping fuel in it using the in line primer bulb, by squeezing it when the engine is running, so that it doesn't run out of fuel. if that doesn't work, there is something else wrong. another way to try and do it is to throw some fuel (or either) down the throat of the carb while it is running and begins to stall out. just don't use too much either- it isn't very good for the motor. i'm in charlotte, so i can't be of much physical help... one other thing you will probably need to do is a water pump on it. they are rubber and if it has been sitting a while, should be done. that is also true if it is run for any length of time without being hooked up to a water source.

^x2 If you can keep it running by forcing fuel to it somehow then the fuel supply is your problem.

thanks guys! took your advice. figured out it wasn't the fuel pump by trying to keep it running by pumping the fuel bulb. wouldn't work. realized then it must be the carb. even though I cleaned it I must not have got the carb fully clean. fourth time was the charm :( Ran it on Jordan today. Runs like new. Thanks again!

another great tip that most people dont know on boat motors is the plugs need to be changed every year and indexed toward the intake for maximum performance and efficiency!
