hey guys i was sitten around today thinkin about tryin to build a rc airplane. i live in cary and can't always get out and go wheel when ever i want since the jeep is in a million pieces but i also get burnd out workin on it all the time. so i was thinking about another hobby that i can do locally. anyone on here ever built one or tried doin it. my dad flys planes and his buddies are always flyin rc planes and they look like fun to me so i am tryin to get an idea about what i am about to get myself into. try Remote Control Rock crawling. build a back yard course. You need a lot of open air to fly a plane. you also need a large wallet. crashing sucks. LOL...prepare to never see alteast one plane again! A neighbors kid with an RC toy on the wrong freq will cause you to lose control of your several hundred dollar toy. You cant fly on windy days, cant fly at nite.

i'm in no way saying they are not fun.. its a blast. just frustrating.

I started one way back, still have it in the garage... i think the only thing i finished was the wing. It is some kind of training model, if youre interested in giving it a shot let me know, ill come off it pretty cheap.

I have one in the attic. Its wing span is near 7 ft. Its huge. i have never put an engine in it or anything though.

I looked into them, and ended up with an R/C Boat, which I never actually got to run

Then I picked up an electric R/C car, and that was really fun.

The planes were fun, there was just limited space to run them. Unless you know of a club around you with a field to fly in, theres really no point. The club I knew around me flew off an old dragstrip, so there wasnt much around.

The planes are also a bit harder to learn, but if you get the right radio system with them, its not too bad. You can link up two systems together, and if you get in trouble a more experienced guy can fix it.

I have no experience in the planes but i looked into it and it got pretty costly. I actually wanted an RC helicopter, those things look sick! But they are as much as a nice used car.

I would go with the gas powered RC cars, those things will fly! Or better yet, i know a guy who is selling an adult racing go cart for cheap that runs off ethenol (sp?) and goes 70 mph with the govenor on. It will cost you as much as a plane, but prolly more fun.

The Helicopters are VERY expensive. On top of that, you will break them, sometimes something minor, sometimes something catastrophic.

However, they sell smaller R/C helis now, and most of them are cheap enough to learn on without really worrying about it.

Park Flyers

If you want to get into RC planes - try the style called a Park Flyer. These are small electric planes that are suitable for flying in a park. They are cheap. They have an easy to learn control system. I bought one - flew it for a while - had some fun - and realized that crashing something more expensive wasn't for me.

I built and flew RC airplanes for several years before I got into the wheelin' stuff. It is lots of fun, but can be a pretty good financial bite. I had probably 6 planes of different sizes at one time with the biggest having a 9 ft. wingspan and a weedeater type gas engine. That one even had a smoke system I installed to use when doing aerobatics. I used to average 3 months building and outfitting a plane. Now I throw all my time and money into something I can ride around in. :driver:

Related to this subject, there is a really cool RC airport behind the Lowe's in York S.C. To get there you hang a right coming out of Lowe's, go down the road to the next right & it's up on the right. Members only though. My son & I went to check it out & there were several people there flying. One dude had a remote control glider.

ya my dad flys the real gliders and that is where i got the idea for the rc planes cause when they all land they get out there little planes and fly it looks like alot of fun

Yes I have very expensiver if you can take 5 + 100.00 bills and tear them up you not get into rc planes or take the 500.00 give it to me and I will save you your 1st 3 planes teaching you to fly...lol Serious ripp up 500.00 and throw it away and you are ready..

I've been wanting to try one of those hydrofoams (google it, there are a number of videos). Air Hogs bought the rights to that thing and they were selling 'em from target for ~70 bucks. They're a plane/hydrofoil cross.

Back in the mid 1970's my friend spent a whole summer building a model airplane. Made from scratch with balsa wood & cloth covering coated with dope.He even painted it up like an old warbird. It was the type they used to have where you use two strings on a handle to control the plane. You fly it around in a circle & control it's altitude mostly. 1st time out, he fired up the cox engine after a few tries & up it went. After three circles & a few tricks it slammed into the ground so hard it smashed the engine beyond repair. The rest of it was in tiny fragments. Cant you fix it back up Ritchie? Nope! Ya gonna build another one? Nope! That was the end of Ritchie's flying days! EDIT; There was the time Ritchie tried out model rocketry. We think the thing landed in the Navy supply depot. After much considering we decided not to go find out. Even at 14 years old we new the Navy wouldn't take kindly to projectiles being fired onto their position.
