Anyone own a cabin they rent?

I am seriously considering buying one up in the West Jefferson area. My wife and I like to go up there and always rent a cabin while we are there. I know the rental season is probably only like half the year, but it would be really nice to have a place we can go whenever we want and not spend $500 for a few days up there. We can afford to buy one and make the monthly payments on it, but wondering if it is actually worth it to do something like this.

I know extra repairs/maintenance and all, but still would be cool. I grew up with my grandfather having a cabin and we loved going up there on weekends. Granted it was an hour from our house and not 3-4 hours, but still.

I kind of feel like the general response will be "stupid idea, just rent one" but I might be pleasantly surprised.

No idea about cabin rentals, but I enjoyed the year I lived in West Jefferson. I was working at Chemi-Con and saw a truck with an NC4x4 sticker on it. Hard to believe it has been that long ago.

We've been going up there for years now, we've fallen in love with the area.

I don't think its a stupid idea. I don't think I could rent it out though. I know it would help offset the cost & expenses but that's the way I'm wired. I think you'll be surprised at the number of off season rentals. Me and my wife have rented a cabin in every season of the year. The season doesn't matter to us, we just like to get away. And based on the availability when we go to make a reservation, there are a number of people who don't care what time of year it is.

My family has a place in Wintergreen. We realized a long time ago, the weekends we wanted to be up there, are some of the busier weekends for rentals, so it started to limit our days to have fun there. We stopped renting it for that reason and now just use it whenever we want to.

I think it's an awesome idea. Something I wish I could do myself.
Renting it, not sure I'd want to, but if I did, it would probably be to those I know, and know well. I'd also want some security, as in, alerts to my phone with video, so I could see what was going on.
But if it's in the budget to have it without the need for renting, that would be even better.
Off grid, self sustained type place, would be my preference.

Zillow, Ashe County, uncheck everything but "houses" under home type, sort cheapest first. I can spend hours doing zillow.
