Anyone run WVO in their diesels anymore?

This was a big thing several years ago, but I haven't heard much recently about it. If anyone is running a veggie oil conversion, I have 5 gallons of used (only fried two turkeys with it) peanut oil that I have no use for. If it can't be used as WVO, is there a convenient spot to dispose of it?

Common rail diesels don't like anything other than good, clean fuel. So it's mostly older diesels or anything with HEIU (oil fired) injectors.

I'll usually strain it, bottle it back up, and use it as I need it 🤷‍♂️ It's good for a fish fry!

You can get by with that in different pre-common rail applications. It takes some work and prep to use waste oil on the modern common rail diesel engines with injection pressures exceeding 25K psi.

12v Cummins engines can use it with a decent filtration setup and additives, but it's not a multi fuel engine as some like to believe.

If you've got an oil burner for a garage or shop that'd be a good use, else you can ask a fast food shop to add it to their waste oil container.

I know around here, all the sources for free used oil dried up bc they realized it could be sold to the same crowd. Then without the cool factor of free gas, interest was gone and the whole thing died.

That's what I figured. I was pretty close to pulling the trigger on a diesel rabbit pickup back when it was becoming popular with the intent of a WVO conversion seeing as how I live in the heart of hush-puppies and BBQ, but back then the WVO technology was still new and not fully tested. Most were saying the amount of filtration needed out weighed the benefit of free fuel.

There's no free fuel anymore either. The commercial wvo industry is booming right now thanks to renewal fuels mandates.

I never understood the attraction of it.And no it wasnt "free" fuel.

Throw it on the next bonfire. Thats what I do with all the used peanut oil from the holidays. Several of the previous years oil changes will sometimes end up there too after she's good and hot.
I have a friend (believe it or not) who heats his shop w waste oil so he gets all my oil,90W,atf and other.

Same here. And same here.

A friend of mine did the WVO in his 12v Cummins for many years. This was about 10-20 years ago though. He would get the oil for free from restaurants, then heat it up to boil off any water, then filter it, then put it in his truck. I think he would typically process about 100 gallons at a time.

I couldn't use WVO in my shop bc I'd be too hungry all the time and not get anything done.

I put about 80K miles on my 2000 7.3 6 speed dually running WVO blended with diesel. in the summer heat I would cut the WVO 70/30 and would add more diesel in as the weather got colder. down to 30* Then a clean out of straight diesel of 10 gallons and a couple cans of seafoam. Take out on the highway and blow it out.. Built a dewatering/filter plant out a 55 gallon drum. And my WVO was free...

In hindsight, diesel seems almost like it was free back then too :(
not back in the housing market crash of 2008, 4-5$ a gallon drove me to alternative fuel. And why now I purchased a 6.4 2500 ram gasser rather then a cummins... Along with the SCR engine bullshit. I get enough of those issues at work.

Yep, remember that. I was driving about 60 miles per day round trip in old diesel Passat.

If anyone is interested, I have about 30 gallons +/- of clean veggie oil located in Durham at 27704 that I've tried in the past to get rid of on craigslist for free. Everyone swarmed me wanting the fuel tank/tool box it is in instead so I had to delete the ad. There is a pump and filter attached to it that may work? If not I have equipment to pick it up to pour. Would require several containers. I can deliver for free as well within reasonable distance. I work in Raleigh and travel to Boone regularly so anywhere in between. By taking it, you would be doing me a favor!
I needed the bed space. And I have no desire to use it up at a gallon at a time per full tank for the truck sits much longer than it is used commonly for months at a time. And the fuel lines are not heated. So hopping in it on a 12 degree morning could possibly create issues with it in the lines. Risks I don't need to take.

If any interest, please PM.

Go to your favorite restaurant and ask them if you can dump it in their container. Depending on their volume, they might be getting a few cents per pound for theirs.

I never dug deep into it until now but I just researched and my local household waste recycling facility website says they will take it. I just don't know how much they will accept per visit? And I don't have that many containers unless I start picking up buckets I see along the road. Or just make several trips. I estimate it's about 200-250 pounds and assumed it was worth more to someone who could use it. Had no idea it was only worth change. I'm finding it's an odd thing to try to get rid of. I don't have any restaurant connections and would feel a bit dumb to walk in and ask a manager. Think that route would be best to just dump it in and go but not what I would do. And it's way too much to try to burn in bonfires without making a mess.

I will just work on recycling it. Thanks!
