So, my wife promised me that we would take my dream vacation to Germany probably next year....I know its still a ways off, but I'd like try and figure out some plans.... Here is what I am wanting to do. I don't really care for the modern city like frankfurt, I want to see all the old medieval stuff. The 2 main things I want to do is visit Neuschwanstein Castle and go to Bruges. I know that Bruges is about a 4 hr train ride from frankfurt....My question is...I don't really care to be stationed in one place...Id like to kind of travel around. Although, I dont want to have to carry everything that I bring with me around.....I just don't know about staying at a hostel and "backpacking" Never been over seas before, so just trying to figure out what would be the best thing to do....stay stationed somewhere and just travel by the euro rail, or pack light and keep moving? I really enjoy all the old architecture of Germany and am infatuated with castles....

any advice?

rent a car. make sure the gps is up to date. enjoy!
you could rent a small van type vehicle and sleep in it some--maybe every other
day or so get a motel room to clean up ect. a good working gps is the shizle.

Visit Baden-Baden, Two Great Castles, Altes Schloss and Neues Schloss (Literally, Old Castle, and New Castle) And some great public Bath Houses (Spas). It's also worth the trip over to Paris while you are there, Some beautiful old Churches there, and the Louvre. If you do go to Paris, Eat in the Latin Quarter, They like Americans and aren't so rude.

I can't offer much on how to travel though. I was stationed there, so just drove everywhere...

I was in Bulgaria for 3 weeks with nothing but a backpack, a very small one at that.

Pretty easy to do. Buy clothes designed to dry quickly so you can do laundry pretty quickly. I packed some travel soap slips to wash my clothes in, worked great. Make sure you get compression bags and you can pack even more in. Don't bother packing toiletries like toothbrush, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. Just buy them there and throw them away when you leave, less to pack.

I had two pairs of underwear, and two pairs of socks for the entire trip, and I still smelled better than half the people there, because no one had time to was their clothes.

#1 - rent National Lampoon's European Vacation

#2 - take notes

#3 - have epic vacation
HA! watched it last night!
Not that I don't want to go to Paris but Id like to stay within Germany, spending most of my time in Bavaria, Bruges, Belgium, and Dusseldorf. I'd like to visit Vienna, Austria as well as the smaller islands in Bavaria.
I even thought about flying into London and then taking a train overnight to frankfurt or munich.

Good luck I'm envious. I've only be to Berlin and now I have the fever to travel all over.

Check train passes vs airline. It may be cheaper to fly than a train pass.
