Well my parents are moving out to El Paso, TX and when I heard I instantly thought Moab, UT... but it's about 500 miles from El Paso.

I started looking around and found the Chile Challenge and there seems to be a ton of trails in and around Las Cruces, NM (which is about 45 mins from there new place). Im trying to set up a trip out there over Thanksgiving and plan to wheel.

So, has anyone wheeled Las Cruces or NM? That area would work out better so I wouldnt have to drive as much... BUT, if I cant work out Las Cruces then I guess i'll have to settle for Moab in November.... :D

EDIT:

here are some trail names I've found out there.. anyone heard of them.. and most of these trails are within 45 mins of my parents new house and from google images look to be pretty hardcore...

Tabasco Twister
Habereno Falls
Rocotillo Rapids
Patzcuaro's Revenge
Broad Canyon
Amities Ledges

There is a Jeep board called Jeeps-offroad.com and a lot of those guys are from Texas, Arkansa, New Mexico, Colorado, California, ect....... I have seen them talk about Las Cruces and they seem to like it. Check out that forum and do a search. yous may even be able to find some pics on there of the place.

November wheelin' in SE Utah is excellent. If Las Cruces doesn't work out, keep that in mind.

IIRC, they used to have some rockcrawling competitions in or around Las Cruces.

It sounds, uh HOT, by those names. Never been there to wheel, but west Texas is a desolate place. Make sure everythings running good before setting out. Take lots of pics while there.:bounce2:

yup, spent some time there, gotta agree-used to be a great cajun restaurant downtown(EL Paso), look for it if you like that kind of stuff-if not, then Cattleman's Steakhouse.

Las Cruces wheeling is AWESOME. Check the link in my sig for pics from CC 2 years ago. The people in the local club I met were all really cool, and would probably love to show you around.

I didnt even realize how much is out there until i started looking yesterday. There seems to be an insane amount of trails all close to each other. I emailed the VP of Las Cruces 4wd club and he said he'd meet up w/ me and show me around whenever I want. My little brother (14) is dying to get a jeep and, so my as well get one while he's out there and and enjoy it (only be there for 3 years... then back to NC).....

So, Im most likely going to take the jeep out there over Thanksgiving for a week or so....

Kilby,

the pictures are awesome.... I think late FEB 08' will be a good time to visit the folks for a week!

Now I just need to convince them to buy another XJ and let me build it and leave it out there for when I come to visit....

Oh, yeah... 100% beautiful weather in February. Clean air and dry weather. Good thing, cuz those canyons would straight up flood with a decent rainfall. Take a dust mask or something with you. Seriously. On our last day riding we got caught behind a line of Jeeps high-tailing it out of the canyon to beat the sunset, and I wound up with a NASTY sinus infection from the dust. My camera bags are still spitting the stuff out over a year later.

There is a trail for every level of ability in the Robledos where the CC is/was held. It's BLM land that's MAYBE 20 miles from Downtown Las Cruces.
