My wife wants an apple watch for Christmas. I'm completely apple illiterate so I have no idea what to get. She teaches and coaches soccer and says she wants one so she can check messages from our kids teachers or whatever while teaching or out on the field. I ain't spending $800 for a damn watch. Any last year's models that are worth having?

I have had several models and haven’t seen one do anymore for me than the last. Maybe some people use them for more things then I do. But I’m same as her, check messages and see who’s calling without pulling the phone out. My current one is a 4 and the wife’s as well.

The previous years work fine. I never bothered to buy them outright. Why should I? I can get them from the phone store in payments (interest free). Leveraging 101

The series 8 is 399, the monthly payments are $16 or something like that. Dont be cheap on your wife bro, spoil her. So she'll want to spoil your rooster

If your wife is big boned get her the 45mm, otherwise the 40mm

The 8 like has been said isn't much different than the 7. I only got the 7 because I was on a 2, so it was a huge leap. It is like phones, each year there is a new one with minor updates.

You can also look at the SE if she doesn't need some of the more "fancy" stuff, its got what most people would want. Based on what you have said, if she just wants something that does that stuff get the SE, if you want something that you know will last 3-4 years for her without issues, go with the 8.

I agree with this. Me personally, Ive had too many issues with SE products from Apple over the years. So I have made the personal decision to steer clear. But that last incident was also 3 years ago.

Iirc the SE is 299 and the 8 is 399.

Seeing as how the main reason is the. messaging and phone use when it is not practical to have your phone on you. I would suggest getting the celluar ones, not the bluetooth/wifi only ones. You get the bluetooth/wifi only ones, you quickly realize it becomes a useless watch unless youre standing within X feet of your phone.

The SE2 for the watch is basically the series 6, they have now basically recycled the top tech of 2 years ago and branded it SE in most instances. Agree with you that sometimes the SE has issues because you are trying to run the new stuff that takes more power on a 2 year old device (the day you buy it), 2 more years from then its about a 4 year old processor. The good thing is the watch doesn't take as much "power" as a phone to use. I think you can find the SE right now for 229-259 depending on side, and the 8 is on sale for 379 most places. For a 100 buck difference I'd buy a 8, for 150, I might consider an SE.

Good point on, for what she wants, is her phone on her or does she need the cell connection.

Thanks for the responses. The farthest she will be away from her phone would be on the soccer field, but midfield really isn't that far from the sideline where her phone is. I think I'm just going to get her the se. I will be surprised if she actually wears the thing.

I've got the series 1. had it about 4 years or so and its still kicking and does exactly what I need it to. Lets me know if I have a message and what the time is.

i still will wear my series 2 sometimes (mostly when riding dirt bikes or something I might mess it up), but holy crap clicking any button takes forever to load the screen compared to the new ones.

I was going to ask if she currently wears a watch. Mine wanted one, got her a new one last year and I think she wore it almost all day one time lol
Exactly my expectation. No, she doesn't wear a watch.

Yeah, that is the one thing about it. Slow as all get out. But I think I can live with it vs. spending a couple hundred on a new one.
