Going to take the motorhome up to New River State Park, on US 221 between Sparta and West Jefferson....

What's the best route to take from the triangle -- Google maps fastest is Hwy 18 up thru Laurel Springs, but it looks like it will be a twisty road...guess there is a better route for a motorhome towing a Jeep. How would it be to go 21 to Sparta from 77, then 221 to the state park?

I would take 77 to 21 before I went up 18 in a motorhome pulling anything.

Probably the easiest drive will be a little longer. 421 thru Wilkes up the mtn like you're going to Boone but hang a right on 221 out to Jefferson and the park. 4+ lane almost the whole way. You've gotta pull a mtn no matter which way you go so it's kind of a wash in that regard.

If it were me I'd run 421 and hang a right on 221. A lil out of the way but 421 isn't that bad of a ride and 221 isn't that curvy... I used to live about 2 miles from where you're going..... Damn I miss that place....

Yep, this is probably the best way to go. We go up to this area 1-2 times a year.

I would be interested in seeing a trip report. We where headed to the same in August but decided to pull a bit farther to Grayson Highlands to camp in some trees instead of the open area at New River State park.

Unsure exactly when, trying to pick a few days we can run away. Thanks for the tip on the yardsale...not sure I could drive thru that and not want to kill.

That yard sale is pretty cool though, a lot of interesting stuff. Another great place to camp is Hungry Mother... Beautiful campgrounds and kid friendly.

Hungry Mother State Park

Not too much more of a drive but definitely a better experience if you've never been

saying 'New River park' is like saing truck. you going to 221, or Wagner, or where specifically? they are all right on top of another. another vote for 421/221 421 to 16 is a Beeeeatch

Ended up with some free days, and headed up there this past weekend...left Thursday the 28th, just got back a little while ago (Sunday). Every campground we checked was full up for the weekend...but found a spot at Millers in Laurel Springs. We had stayed up there a couple years ago in the S250. Decent campground, full hookups. Went up to Deep Gap, then 221 thru Jefferson, then 113 south.

Pretty narrow roads for a 102" RV, but we made it fine. New to the RV, but have driven a bus a few thousand miles up the mountains, so it was OK. Still was one of the most challenging driving experiences I've ever had, when it started raining. Was surprised at the number of 18 wheelers and dump trucks we met on the 2-lanes (especially after it started to rain good).

About a mile from the campground, picked up a rock in the windshield from an approaching truck. :(

Came back via the parkway to Deep Gap...much easier, little wider lane, wider shoulders, and no trucks. Was able to manage 45 the whole way, except for a few of the curves.

My neck of the woods there guys. All within 40 minutes of my home. Used to ride with the trailblazers up saddle mtn, and end up on the parkway in that vicinity. Used to be some good wheeling in the mountains here at home. Unfortunately all bought up and private now...
