Looking at buying a new set of lockers for my d30/8.25 combo in the xj. Is there any real difference other than price? Are all 3 coming from the same Chinese factory?

I like spartan because they are easier to assemble. Other than that I can’t tell you a large difference.

I’ve had Spartan and LockRight in my Jeeps. Much prefer the Spartan. Easier install, and seems to be a little quieter than the LockRight. But I had no problems with either.

I have an Aussie in the back of mine. I'm pretty sure they're made in USA.

Lockright has the smallest pins of the 3, but I can't remember which of the other 2 is better. There is a best choice, but I can remember which. Just that it's not Lockright.

I do hear very good things about Aussie. If I were to order one right now, it would not be a LockRight. Not that it is bad, but because I know Spartan is better. It has a harder cross pin too.

This is why I would go with Spartan.

I think this alone makes the Spartan the better locker. This style of locker puts all the stress on the cross pin. I would never think of installing a luchbox locker without a hardend crosspin. The Spartan comes with one, so its the better deal.

You’re right, I forgot about that. The LockRight requires you to reuse your old cross pin while the Spartan comes with a new one.

And if you didn’t know, the way these lockers work is all of the force is applied to the cross pin which pushes out on the side gears to engage both axle shafts, and when torque is not applied the springs help push the side gears back in and will allow the shafts to spin differently. Thus why it is called a “ratchet locker” sometimes as that’s the ratcheting sound being heard and why it will “unload” sometimes and sound like something broke. It’s all normal.

FWIW, My D35 Lockright came with a hardened crosspin back in 2001.

I have had an Aussie in front and rear axles, and never had a problem with any of them. I must say, the reason I started with an Aussie is they were the only locker available for a rear 44a back in the day.

That's an Aussie locker if my reading comprehension skills are on point today.

The company supposedly makes both. The torq ones have less pins and the 60/14 bolt ones. At the top of the page are some Aussie lockers though.

I'm just reading where it says "Aussie Locker" in the address of the link you posted.

I know that's not the same Torq, but did doug ever get his axles?

No but unsolved mysteries is doing an episode on it.

hardened cross pins are a catch 22, with the hardened pin the weakest part of the diff is now the carrier. and it can cause the carrier to break.

after i busted a carrier, i started using a regular pin and carried a spare. its easier to replace on the trail and you can keep wheeling. if you break a carrier your back on the trailer going home.

I’ve never had a Spartan but can attest to the Lockrite being noisy. That said, it survived broken axle shafts and never failed me.

You can always swap carriers. :flipoff2: Especially in Harlan where there is a junk yard with every vehicle ever made in it.

To the OP go spartan. I’ve had 3 Spartans they have never broke. Even with @77GreenMachine exploding everything around it. Had some buddies explode lock rites. Other buddy snapped a 35 spline chromo shaft and spartan is fine.

He ain’t lying. In Harlan last month I exploded a rear shaft and it took out the bearings, adjuster nut, and the carrier but the Spartan locker was fine.
