Auto toyota trans rebuild?

i have a 85 toyota pickup 5.29 gears sitting on 38.5s with an automatic transmission, the transmission has to take off in 2nd the bump it into drive but it doesnt stay in 3rd long enough and gears up and had no power. is there anyone who could build a heavy duty more reliable trans. for this rig or should i just 5speed it? would really like to keep it auto though
