Auto Tranny Question.

I think this is a stupid question but I'm gonna ask anyway.....

A friend of mine has a 97 Explorer AWD. She said it was "stalling" or "slipping out of gear" at highway speeds. One guy told her it was the TCase. Guy replaced 2 Gears. Gets it put back in making a new noise. A loud constant rattle........ She parked it, I looked at it and pulled the TCase. While the TCase is out we crank it up for another listen. Not the noise is extremely loud (tranny exposed, sounds like a piece of metal rolling arouond in there), so we know it's the tranny (probably nothing ever wrong with the TCase). I did drive it around her driveway listening to it, but that's it. Performed ok, but never really got over 3 mph. Back to my question..

Is it possible it's something external (a switch or sensor - NO Check Engine light though).. I don't know much about AWD.
 
First thing I would do is check the tranny fluid level. Next step, if that doesn't help, would be to pull the transmission pan and check for metal shavings. Replace the filter while you are in there. If there are metal shavings then you likely have bigger issues. If not then it may be a torque converter problem since you said it was stalling. Just my 2c.

Not likely its an external problem. But I may be wrong.
 
is it a 5r55 or a 4r70, if it's a v8 it's a 4r70, if it's a 4.0L it's a pice of junk 5r55. I worked at a dealership and we had to put a bunch of torque converters in explorers because of a rattling noise inside them. It could also be a pump making the noise, but it will be obvious b/c there will be metal in the trans pan. Check the flex plate first, there may not be a crack obvious to the eye, but take a small hammer and tap on it in different spots and listen, it will be obvious to hear if it is cracked. There are a couple of other things it could be internal, but it is very rare for them to occur, so check what me and everyone above has said first. my guess would be a torque converter.
 
Yeah, its a 4.0 She hasn't decided on what she's gonna do with it. It has 150k on it so she might sell it for whatever, she hasn't made up her mind. I'll look into what you posted. Thanks
