This is bordering on stew-pid but hey, it's newbie tech.

Can I overrev my XJ by keeping the gas pedal floored?

Most of my vehicles have been manual and there it's obvious. You pick your gear, floor it, when it's close to redline, shift to next gear, etc...

Do Cherokees have rev limiters? Or will the automatic shift to the next higher gear when you hit redline?

I don't normally drive like a maniac but I was accelerating on a merge ramp to get in front of a 18 wheeler. I noticed the revs got pretty high but hey, I didn't get squashed and the old XJ moved faster than normal.

Thats what the kickdown/passing lever/linkage/cable does. When you floor the gas pedal it shifts down a gear and your little xj-that-could revs to the sky. Or at least to it's limiter, which is probably set around 5200rpm, if not...until the valves float.

Those 4.0's go pretty high. I like gettin' on mine when needed. I've never hit a rev limiter. It does more or less float out. Maybe I'm not pushing it to the fullest, but with over 108XXX I dont want too even knowing the longevity of the 4.0's.
