Automatic shifter very loose, how can I tighten it?

I just purchased a 89 F250 4x4 Diesel and will be picking it up tomorrow. One of the first things I wanna fix is the column shifter. When shifting between gears the shifter is very loose. There is definate notch for P R N D 1 2. You kinda have to jiggle the shifter sometimes to get it in gear. Is this just a linkage adjustment? If so how do I replace or tighten it up?
