I am getting ready to pull the motor and trans out of my 2000 XJ. I will be replacing the motor and would like to have the trans gone through while its out. Does anyone have recommendations of a trans shop that does good work? I dont think there is anything wrong with it other than it has right at 200K miles and would like it refreshed while it is out.

for all things gear and jeep related my go to is @Jody Treadway ...being that its jeep gear related...seems like a no brainer

AW4s give extraordinary long life that is trouble free. I would be very careful choosing anyone as they likely won't have much experience with them.
In my 14 years at the Jeep dealer, i never once saw one fail. Replaced a couple solenoids, but that's it.

I'd leave it alone if it were mine.

Quoted for the truth! I've got one that was in a field for 2 years before I started wheeling it in 07... It's still in my current rig still pulling in all gears.

This has always made me wonder why AW4s arent used more in hotrods or other swaps? They seem to hold up well behind 4.0l strokers and supra setups.

because they waste a lot of engine power and have shitty shift points. I've been debating on adding a shift kit to mine to help address but then I think I should just do a LS swap and move on with life.

Told you Gregg! Haha. I said the same thing the other day. I've seen some AW4's go through some horrible things and keep on going.

The shift points can be eliminated with manual controls. They are used behind some big turbo supras, so I would think there are ways to make them work better. They have got to be better than a 700r/4l60.
