AW4 transmission for 2001 Jeep XJ

I need an AW4 transmission for 2001 Jeep XJ. This is for my sons jeep, he is based at Fort Bragg. Just put a new engine in it and now the transmission is dead. Cant buy a win for this mod. Bonus points if you can put it in.

The aw4 is pretty stout and don't typically give many problems.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the AW4

I've gotten enough questions concerning AW4 specs and "will x year AW4 fit into x year XJ?" that I figure I should probably just write it all up once and for all... so here goes! The AW4 transmission was used in 4.0L equipped XJs from 1987 through 2001. It was also rarely used in 2.5L equipped...

1997, the AW4 is exactly the same as the 1990.5-1996 units, except the electrical connector for the wiring harness changed. A simple cut and splice will solve this problem.

It was acting funny before the engine swap. It would not downshift automatically, so my son was dropping it into lower gears manually when he would stop. Of course...he didn't get it fixed and now we have this. Not sure if its related.
