ax-15 in place of a nv3550

You would need the bracket for the transfer case shifter linkage for the AX-15 since the 3500 is different but the 3500 is a much better trans.

The 3500 may be a better tranny, but there is nothing wrong with the AX15. I used the one in my YJ after I swapped in my V8 for a few years with no issues. Only reason I swapped it out was to get a granny first gear..

I went through 3 NV3550's in 70k miles, so I have been less than impressed with it. I think swapping in an AX15 could pay dividends in the long run.

This 3550 is grinding between gears, unless you drive like my granny.
I can drive it like this forever ,but i could never sell it like this.
found a ax15 for 250/300 last week, also found a 3550 for 700.
I will be doing one or the other soon as the clutch give out.

Ok, let's dive into this a little. If it's grinding between every gear, you may have a clutch issue, not a tranny issue. Is it difficult to shift from neutral into first while stopped, with the engine running. By difficult, I mean can you feel resistance in the shifter and can you feel the jeep bump forward just a tiny bit? If so, you've got either a slave or clutch master cylinder problem. Most likely the master if there's no leaks.

3 3550's what have you been doing to it?
They have right foot abhorrence. Stock one made it about 40k, rebuilt, made it to 65k, then bought a good used one, ran it for 10k miles, then swapped in an NV4500.

Im hard on vehicles on the pavement. Offroad I drive like a grandma.

this might be a good place to post this....I have an ax-15 in my 4.0 TJ and it is really really hard sometimes to put it in first gear...its like i have to force it in there and then sometimes into second....time for a rebuild or what?

Probably not. Does it do this at a stop? Any mods like a BL?

Well, instead of waiting for a reply, I'm gonna throw this out there. If your TJ is hard to shift into first while at a stop with the engine running, your problem may not be the tranny. The clutch MCs on these things have a habit of going bad. They will not build/hold sufficient pressure internally. With not enough hydraulic force being pushed to the slave, they don't release the clutch fully. This makes it hard to shift, especially in lower gears, up or down. Mine did this. It was hard to shift into first at a stop and crunched into second while accelerating. The issue was not the tranny (AX5 in my case). It was the clutch MC. I replaced it and now it's fine. You CAN just replace the MC and not have to buy the whole setup from the stealership. If anyone needs the rundown on how to do this, hit me up.

EDIT: You replied while I was typing. LOL

This one has no problems going into first sitting.
really feels like syncronizers, other cars i had use to do it only going into second this one is in all gears up or down.
if you shift slowly pause between gears it goes in without grinding.
got this thing from some rich kids that abused it.
i changed the grease not too much metal came out.
replaced with synthetic
no change.
since it needs a clutch anyway i may do that and see what happens.
or just sell it as is and let someone else fool with it.
i drive it like it is every day, but going in for ankle surgery soon.
can't drive a stick till june, may sell out and start again later

take 5500 for it 2000 tj 120k
