Ok so i have a 88 YJ with a 4.0 and ax15 swapped from a 95 cherokee. They prolly have around 230,000 miles on them both had about 215k before the swap.

So I was drivin to the beach this past weekend (about a 2.5 hour drive) and 3/4 the way there i started to sell somethin funny (not the clutch) and thought it was an animal or something. Drove prolly 5 miles or more then decided to slow down and pull off to see what it was. When i started to slow down i tried to speed up again but i couldnt. The tranny started smoking from the shift boot and area where the clutch is. now i cant get it into first. Was goin about 70mph for 120 miles on the highway too. When i tried to move again just made grinding noises. Disconnected the drive shaft and my dad towed me home. Havent done anything to it yet was gunna drop it this week and see what up and see if i need a new one or not.

Anyone had this problem? Any info helps. Thanks

I might have an answer!

A couple of months back, I was driving my 89 yj about 70mph and everything was going fine. All of a sudden it just stopped pulling and it started smoking. I pulled the transmission to find that the internal slave cylinder was compressed all the way and the seal in the back of it had blown. I am in apex and I am working on my 89 right now. I got the transmission sitting in the trunk of a car and I am driving my tj right now. You may want to check the replace the clutch and slave cylinder because it sounds like it went out. Let me know I have been learning alot about jeeps lately lol

On the newer AX-15 trannies the slave cylinder is on the outside just under the drivers door. Thats where the slave cylinder is on my 94 Wrangler with the AX-15 tranny. Real easy and cheap to change it.
