96 xj anyone went from 5speed to auto? im sure someone here has done one, what all is needed and how bad of a pain in the ass is it? any help much appreciated

pretty easy, find a harness for that year model and trans with tcase, whalla!! its really not that bad, harness at bone yard, flywheel, crank sensor, trans and tcase and couple day to do once you have all parts together. going from 5 speed to AW4, man your going to love the extra power and durability. hope goes well.

Wait, WHAT??? The auto will sap power away, and I don't think the aw4 is any more durable than the ax15. The only benifts of an auto swap are not having to three foot it when crawling, and the little bit of torque multiplication from the torque converter. BUT then you have heat to deal with.

well, i'm pretty sure any XJ enthusiast know the AW4 is indestructible for what it is and way stronger than any XJ manual they came with. ive ran all three Transmissions and AW4 has never once let me down with even 378K miles on one but AX15 and Puggo has not been so friendly but that's just my experience though.

i will agree that the aw4 is the best of the three, but you will not gain any power from it. you will lose power through the aw4. the ax15 is far better than the ax5. as far as the aw4 being indestructible, that is far from the truth.

X2. I have seen a rebuilt aw4 hold alot if power, but they aren't indestructible. The ax15 is a good trans but you'll like the auto in the rocks

AX-15 is a damn good tranny for a jeep, seen many behind V-8's. You will love the auto. offroad, and for that vehicle it should be a straight forward swap. You can get everything you need for the swap at pullapart,id say 200 or less for everything. I love the part about auto giving more power, that guy is such an idiot.

man u have no idea..lol but yea a buddy was looking to do it so i went and nabbed all the plugs i need to make the harness so i should be good.thanks for the input guys

Question? Is there a way to install the aw-4 without attaching it to the ecm. I have an 87 xj with the ba10 and am considering doing this but would like it to be stand alone if I could. Would the renix cps be a problem with using a newer trans?

It uses a tcm, not the ecm. Or you can build/buy a stand alone shifter.

Sent while I should have been doing something constructive...

I know it uses a TCM but can you use the TCM without connecting it to the ecm? The few wires that are coming from TCM to ecm look like they could be "dummied" or hard wired like brake position. But the data wires to ecm, what function do they serve?
