I just purchased a 2000 Jeep TJ Sport once I got it home I was crawling around underneath it trying to get an idea of things I needed to do. While looking at the rear axle which I assumed was a Dana 35 when I purchased it I saw a tag that said use a limited slip oil. I thought that was weird then I looked at the entire cover and I thought that does look like a a 35 cover. I believe I have the limited slip D44 in this jeep but I am looking for second opinions. Sorry for the poor pic my neighbor has my floor jack.

Yep, 44, the 35s have a stupid rubber fill plug.

Here is a picture to help

Thanks guys I thought it was, but did want to get to excited until I confirmed it. I guess the only down fall in the deal is if I wanted to lock I have to replace the carrier.

Anyone running a limited slip D44 in a wrangler that has a opinion on if I should replace it with a locker. I had a 8.8 limited slip in my last TJ and hated it the limited it was basically no better then an open axle.

looks like you can scratch the 8.8 off your build list!!

I haven't jumped to that conclusion just yet!

I know the D44 is the better axle but i am no fan of limited slips. I don't want to spend 7-800 for a selectable locker either. If I can find a reasonable open carrier so I can lock this thing without spending a ton of money it will stay in there. If not I will have a wrangler 44 for sale.

I know this will get the debate going on which axle is better and people will be screaming at me to leave the 44. But i had a 8.8 in my last TJ and I pound the crap out of it with no issues. So I have no problem going with a 8.8 especially since it also upgrades to rear disk.

Look at it this way, you would have to fab up axle mounts for an 8.8, which would probably be much more expensive than buying an open d44 carrier. My vote is to stick with the d44 since it is already there and then save money for new gears/locker/ etc.

Very good point! I also did not realize I can get an open carrier for around $50 bucks that will except the 4.88 I want to run. So I got a feeling I will be sticking with the D44.

Is the front a 30 or 44?
