I'm thinking off starting a project so the family can go trail riding and doing some wheelin also. I'm looking at possibly doing a mid 80's cherokee with a v-8 conversion and possibly a 700-r4 trans and a ford inch rear, on something like a 35-36 inch tire. I'm wanting to build it and do the conversion with parts i already have. What front axle should i be looking for, and what is it out of? I'm also seeing gear ratios from 4.88-5.29 in four cylinder rigs- what is your opinions on gear ratio in a v-8 rig as well. Thanks in advance i'm still in the planning stages so there may be more questions in the future.

Probably a D44 will do you fine.. 4.56 or 4.88 would be my suggestion. With the O/D, highway RPM's aren't as much of an issue, and the deeper gears will get you going better.

I can tell you 38's with 4.10's sucks.

D44/9" would probably be one of the best routes to go as far as axle sets, unless you don't want fullwidth.

and x2 on the 4.56 or 4.88s. I have a v6 with 4.88s and 37s and it does really well on the roads. Just take into consideration how much road driving the vehicle will encounter.

Yea, I'm with Rich. I'm running 4.10s and 38's and its just plain horrible. I'd go 4.88s. I saw your s10 at Quiznos last night man. I just got back in town from the Callalante trip. Your truck turned out real good.

Thanks a lot man. Were you driving the big red K5?
I need to get a few more things down, including sliders and I'll be in better shape to go wheeling.
I'd like a which, but the pockets in my jeans only run so deep

Yea man that was me. The Jeep is still back in Greensboro...motor swap begins this weekend. Then I'm hoping to get it up here. We'll have to hook up and go wheeling sometime. I'd love to get a winch too, but its not in the cards right now.

Sounds good man. I'll try to be trail ready in the next few weeks. Let me know when you're going to head out somewhere around. I know some guys that should be going to Gulches and Tellico in the next month or so if you're interested.

Thanks alot guys thats kinda the direction i was thinking of going also. What does the d44 come out in, so when i go to "the yard" i know what to look for. Thanks
