axle resplining question

I've been searching on here and pirate and I can't seem to find the numbers I'm looking for. What size diameter shaft do you have to have to be able to spline it for a ford 35 spline.

I'm planning on having my 406mog shafts re-splined to a ford 35 spline end but I want to make sure I can reuse what I have instead of having to get all new shafts made. I can't seem to find anywhere that can tell me what diameter the shaft has to be so it can be cut down to a 35 spline.

I think you need 1.5" to do the 35 spline.
