Axle Selection?

For the front axle I would prefer a D44 but will settle for a Corp 10 bolt. Need P/S drop and WMS-WMS around 65" but no more than 67".

For the Rear a Corp 10-12 bolt with the same width.

I've been searching and most D44's that would work are early 70's and the corp 12 as well. But would like to keep a 6 lug pattern if at all possible.

I think the early 70's D44's had drum brakes. I am not sure what year they switched to discs, but think it must be around 74-76. The 12 bolt rear was used in GM 1/2 ton trucks until about 1981 I think.

If I was in your shoes, I would go with a D44 in the front, and probably a Ford 9" in the rear with new 6 lug axle shafts. I'm a big fan of the 9" rear, and it can be upgraded to be made stronger as you progress with your truck. Lockers for the 9" are cheaper too, and it isn't a C-clip rear axle. If you came across a cheap/free 12 bolt though, I wouldn't hesitate to run it at least for a little while. Especially if it already had the gear ratio you want.

Which years would I look at to get a 9". What are the normal widths of them? This is all new to me so any advice is great. Just not sure how to find all these parts cause of all the changes through the years. I know I want a D44, PSD and no wider than 67" if possible. As far as the rear I haven't set on a specific one yet.

I put a post on craigslist for a Front Dana 44 psd and got a reply today. The guy said he may be parting out a J10 that he has. He has a D44 front and D60. From what I got when researching those axles on that truck, it should be pre-79, 6 lug and 65" wide. He asked me to throw him a price. In the local salvage yards for those trucks they run around 200 each. Does that seem reasonable or should I start lower and let him bring it up on me?

axles

Try starting at 300 and take them home for 350 that's pretty decent for both of you but stuff is only worth what someone will pay for it that's my 2cents
