Building a 1990 YJ from the ground up. Jeep is down to chassis and its time to put in new axles. I'm going with a SOA. I am looking for the easiest swap front and rear and from everything I have read the D44 is the best swap. I don’t want to cut anything down and I wouldn’t be opposed to full width
What vehicle do I look for to acquire these axles?
Can full width D44 be used?
All other information is greatly appreciated.
Thanx!

That is a very open-ended question. You need to narrow down a few things. Will the be a dedicated trail rig or do you need to keep some street-ablity? What is the max tire size you will be running (keep in mind future upgrades)? Waggy D44's is a popular swap. I would suggest a lot of reading and searching, followed by more reading and searching. :bounce2:

I have researched countless number of hours online always ending up with the same 5 articles. Frustrating! Anyhow, the idea for my rig is

Street and Trail ability. I'd like both.
37'' + Tires (I want to use the 33'' that came with it for now)
350 GM Engine (I will cross that bridge when I get finished with the chassis/ suspension)
Stock Tranny and xfer case.

Sounds like a set of 3/4 ton j truck axles would fit the bill.
Dana 44 front (could go to Chromo axles if you have issues later) and a 60 rear.

a fullwidth dana 44 can be used...

For the front, if you arent wanting to cut anything down, the only real bolt in option for SOA would be a 78-79 HP44 from F250 with leaf springs.... '80+ waggy/FSJ dana 44, or F150 HP44 can also be used, but you will haveta weld spring perches on....

As for the rear, I dont know what is bolt in for a YJ...

Also, if you are swapping in a 350, id probly get away from stock tranny and tcase... and your options are open here... but T350 and 700R4 are popular choices...

and then you haveta choose if you want to remain driverside drop axles or passenger side drop with your tcase selection...

if you go PSD, then that opens your axle choices up some too...

I have a 89 YJ with full width axles. We out boarded the front springs so the 10 bolt will bolt up to it. The rear 3/4 ton axle will bolt right in, so you will only have to move the front axles spring perches. The reason I out boarded my front springs is because I will be going to a D60 front when I get home from Iraq.

this is correct, we just got done doing a 91. used the front and rear 44/60 out of 78 f250. front matched almost perfect and e cut and turned the rear for pinion angle. shoot me an email and ill send yousome pics.

8 lug is the way......

But if you weren't sticking with the 33's right off I would go 14 bolt on the back, way stronger than the stock D60 that you would likely have to spend a few dollars on just to make it reasonably strong......
