Whats the general consensus on using tube seals?

I just had the two front axle seals on my JKU replaced (30kmiles) and the dealer says its for mud in the tubes.

Will this prevent mud/water from getting in the axle tubes or is the only answer stay out of the mud.

Because frankly there isn't much I can do around here that doesn't involve some type of mud to traverse.

When's the last time mud got inside your axle tube and hurt anything? I really don't believe that mud damaged your axle seals...

Total waste of money in my opinion. If anything those tube seals are just going to disguise a blown axle seal...

The only advantage I see to running them is if you start with a clean housing, you won't drag the splines of a shaft through all the crud that gets in the tubes and shove all that crap into the diff when changing a shaft.

Just out of curiosity, do they make them if you have sleeves?

I was told no. My jeep is getting sleeves now. I was told they could cut the sleeves shorter, but that would mean the sleeve wasn't all the way in the c and I would think considerably weaker.

I say definitely use them.
We install them along with tube sleeves on a regular basis and you only loose 1 1/2" from your tube sleeves and if that's a big deal I'm sure you could cut down the seal housing and it still work just fine.

Hey thanks for the replies guys, I am going to look at installing a set when I do the sleeves (later this year)

I wish I had known before the dealership replaced the seals because that would have been a good time.

Did you miss the post about not fitting with sleeves? The seals are meant to fit the OD of the original housing, not the sleeve. So, unless you cut the sleeve short (therefore weakening it) you can't use sleeves and tube seals.

Obviously you weren't reading the thread also..

I will most likely trim the sleeve & the tube seal each to achieve the desired fit.

Thanks again to everyone who chimed in.
