Locker only up front?

I would like to regear my D30 and D44 on my TJ due to 35s. I want to lock them as well but for now the funds are only allowing one axle to be locked. Front? Back? Wait and do both? Lunchbox for DD and weekend wheeling?

4.56 and 35's is an ideal combo. I ran that setup from 2001ish till about 2010 in various iterations. Once you get complacent with it, stroke the 4.0, and you will be happy again. I regularly got 14-15mpg with the stroker, 4.56's, and 35's.

I've got a TJ with 35's and five speed and I am running 4.88's and they work great for me, it is a third vehicle so it is not a daily driver. On the highway at 70 I am turning about 2700 rpms. But if you aren't planning to do any severe trailing 4.56's will be fine.

For what I use my jeep for I am extremely happy with 4.88/35 combo.

I want something that won't rape my gas mileage, but have the balls to make it up a hill on the highway. Cause the 33s were dragging up hills. 2700 rpms really isn't bad.

Since i bought my first jeep i have always wanted to run 35s. The 33's on the wrangler looked rather small to me, especially if i go the tube fender route.

I run 4.88s with 35s in my 5-speed TJ and love it. I definitely wouldn't want it any higher (numerically lower).

Where is the best place to order them from? I looked on Ebay and they seemed rather cheap, im imagining the quality is too. Any good references for shops around winston to do it?

You know if you're in there you may as well do lockers since you're gonna have everything apart, unless you wanna pay the labor to put the lockers in later, which means taking everything apart, again.

I bet you find it cheaper to buy axles already set up and swap them in.

Good place to order quality gears and install kits at reasonable prices. Also, while they're not exactly around winston, they do great installs too.

Sure it's worth regearing, depending on how big of a tire you want to run down the road. 35" tires are right at the limit of the LP D30 but you can definitely make it last by not wheeling with a brick for a right foot. For mild wheeling, it's be just fine. Carry spare axleshafts and know how to change them if you break one.

Good point. I just found a lockrite locker on pirate4x4 for the d30. Lockers are pricey so im gonna wait around to regear till i find a locker for the d44, go with 4.56s and get it all done at once.

Look for a spartan locker or an aussie locker.

But the money you spend in a locker, gears, and labor, could be close to finding a used axle ready to go, and buying that and swapping it in, then selling your old axle.

You would either break even, or maybe save a little depending on what kinda deal you found, and MAYBE find a 44 for the front!

But really, if you can deal with the 35s and how they do on the jeep for now, I'd save up and get selectable lockers. They sure are nice to have.

Be it cable(OX), air(ARB), or electric(Eaton) actuated.

I was actually looking for a axle already built. They are hard to find though. I think im gonna toss in the lockrite (since i already ordered it :shaking:) and see what i think before i drop the money on a selectable. Maybe it will be fitting for the wheeling i will be doing...Maybe it will break and ill be in the market for a D44 with a selectable.
