obviously I will not be the one doing this since I am asking basic questions. I just want to know if it is possible and basics so I can know what to expect and what parts to track down....... anyway I want to put a Dana 44 in the front of my 97 TJ. Will D44 out of a 84 Grand wagoneer work. what about the manual hubs? I like manual hubs but can I make it work with my TJ setup? what other D44 may work with the least amount of modification? I would greatly appreciate your time/advise. thank you

I also believe a 44 out of a rubicon would be the least amount of work to swap in. It will already have the coil buckets, im not sure about how all the other stuff will line up, but it should be same in length as your current D30 that you have.

Cost wise the rubicon 44 is the way to go, everything should line up and you'll have a selectable locker. Minimal work involved swapping them out.

a friend of mine consistently broke the "44" rubi front end in his jeep with 33's, idk if I'd rely on one of those axles holding up if I was going through the work of swapping in another axle.

What about the rear? How'd it hold up?

I believe the rubi 44 is not a true d44. A waggy 44 would be stronger.

He didn't have any issues with the rear, like John said the front is a weird dana 30/44 hybrid and my buddy would break shafts all the time with the 33's and he never rode any rocks with it just mild trails and mud.

ah, I wasnt really looking to replace the front just yet, I want to hit the rear first and get rid of the turdy5.

Sorry to hijack your thread jeep'n medic, I guess now you know the front axle from the Rubicon is no good

I know HighRollinTj or "chris" has like a 2002 Tj with front and rear dana 44 out of a wagoneer. he put warn hubs in the front. I want to say he used the factory wagoneer steering and just reamed the pitman arm hole out a little. thats about it other than ordering the bracket kits from rubicon express or ballistics fab makes a kit too.

my front end came out of a 1986 grand wagoneer. i know that if you have to get replacement axle shaft seals for the front axle the part number is 2300, not what they have in the system at advanced. they will try and give you dana 30 shaft seals. but like mileshigh said i have this set up in my wrangler and so far has worked well with my 35's and front and rear lockers. if you would rather buy some bolt in axles i will be selling mine here shortly.

i'm running waggy 44's in a yj with a full spool in the rear and detriot in the frount and 35"boggers have thrashed on it way harder than need be but no problems so far,you can break any thing point beaing the waggy 44 is a good choice verses the bubicon 30/44 hybrid.

front end

thanks for all of the advise folks, looks like waggy 44 is the way to go. how much trouble is it to put a 44 with manual hubs into a TJ. hard/expensive? do you keep it manual or some kinda conversion? highroller keep me in mind when get ready to sell.

Does the Rubicon 44 not still have dana 30 size stubs? I think the R&P is 44 but the rest is dana 30.

You can put a old style 44 or a 60 in the front and what ever you want in the rear. If you haven't decided on a big lift kit yet, a long arm kit will have new brackets front and rear. So you can do anything you want. If you use full size axles they can be cut down to the right size. At this point you will have the knuckles lose and you can set the pinion angel to fit your lift. If man made it you can change it.
