We've got a california king mattress. I forgot to include slowly moving my shoulders left and right to bend my back left and right too. Our mattress is a bit soft, pillow top and I think that helps w my hips/legs from slipping much while I pull w my torso. Laying on my back w pillows under both knees also brings relief and sometimes I sleep like that.
I can’t do a soft bed, and probably would sleep better on the floor honestly. I was planning on rolling up a towel for more lumber support tonight after googling a bit today. And I’ve been doing the pillow under my knees the last few nights.
Sucks to hear this especially happening to our vets, have you tried a inverted table? I have a friend who has similar back issues not as severe as yours, but finds great relief from inverted table in short sessions with long stretching in between he’s been dealing with it for 18+ years and is 42 now with two surgeries on the injury. The foam rollers are great but not sure if they would help you or hurt you more in this situation! Hope you can find some relief from this tho sure seems to be extremely painful when his flares up tho!

You honestly get use to the pain sucking, but it’s frustrating because you go stir crazy feeling lazy lounging around. I’ve got a bunch more work to be able to go wheeling this year. And I just got my k5 up and running and was starting to get it road legal again. And I’m a picky bitch and won’t let anyone else touch it.
And I’m not seeking pity or anything it’s pain, it’s gonna happen. With so many different people having it and ways to relieve it, it’s nice trying new things here and there to see if I can get relief. Also good to see what going under the knife with those who shared their post op experience.

Might able to do the stretch on a carpeted floor but it sucks to get up or down from the floor when back pain is bad. I have 2 firm foam pillows I use under my knees. I stand them up sideways and move a bit towards them so they lean away from my back and pull on my legs. I can usually fall asleep in about 5 mins. when I hurt and I use the pillows and often I wake up w the pillows still under my knees and my back feels pretty good.
Don't keep the same doc/ortho/specialist etc. if they're not helping you. I spent almost 3 yrs w a quack ortho/back specialist w about no relief. This asshole looked like he just left the golf course and had liquor on his breath when I went for another review and I asked for my records. 2 weeks later I had the first epidural w a new doc. scheduled for 5. 1st did nothing, 2nd about 18 hrs of relief, had major relief after 3rd. They did them every 4 or 5 days. The doc called me 3 days after #3 and asked how I was doing. I never had a doc call ME before. I said the pain was about gone and the other 2 were cancelled. I was pissed off that I suffered for so long and this treatment brought much relief quickly. I might regret it later in life but I'm glad for the relief I got and still have. I think I was 34 when I had them. I did'nt have any bone fractures just a bulging disc and possible herniated.
Have you tried suspension seats or do you have them? Was curious if they make a difference. I don’t know if I’ll be able to give up this hobby, I know one day I’ll have to give up driving a stick. But I just try not to worry about that.
I do have suspension seats. Being tucked in to where you aren't moving around is a big advantage. And, I give up my manual trans about 7 years ago. Went from a T-176 to a 350 auto, have never regretted going with the auto
I have a few of the same issues, to the point I was about to get tossed out of the mil. I had a few procedures and several RFA’s and maybe 10 different cortisone shots which helped maybe 15%.
I started doing the yoga twice a week and stopped deadlifting and back squats, not even a little. Do front squats now. I hated hearing it but I started focusing more on core exercises which honestly helped a lot but took almost a year to be noticeable.
One day I was doing a ruck run with an old Alice pack with about 55 lbs. I had the muscle relaxers and Motrin ready for the end but when I dropped my pack I felt great. I was confused and the relief lasted a few weeks. I asked the dr and he said that the weight pressing on my L spine must have forced my discs to play nice and relieved pressure on the nerves which were causing the pain. Now what I do every morning is lay on my stomach with 4 pillows under my chest to suck back in all my discs. It actually is pretty painful while I’m doing it but then I generally feel a lot better and more mobile throughout the day.
Hope you can find something that works out for you.

I miss rucking so bad. I use to actually keep count of how many miles I put on a pair of boots rucking. That was great quality time with yourself and I enjoyed seeing the skinny kids who could run fast as hell, get slowed down by ruck sack. I hated running, lol. My girlfriend reminded me that cleaning my garage out probably agitated it and then spending a few days upside down under the dash of the k5. Moving d60 axle housings and sliding an iron head/block 350 across the garage floor was probably a bad idea.
I buddy of mine did great in the temp. trial... took about 2+ YEARS + 3 tries to get the final probe positioning set, but he's down to about a 1.5-2 out of 10 on the pain scale
