I just had a 1/4 " wall long slip drive shaft made for my Toyota buggy. I'd like to protect the splines by mounting the shorter splined end on the transfer case side. The truck is 4 linked rear. I guess my concern is that the long heavy end of the shaft would be what was sliding in relation to the rest of the truck. Is this a no no?

I usually put the slip end at the transfer case, but a lot of folks run it the other way. I really don't think it matters.

If it's a CV joint shaft, you need the double jointed part up at the t-case. If it's a single joint at both ends, then you can run it either way. The tube is easier to dent, so keep that in mind.

I dont know how the 'rules' state it. But I always run my slips at the top to protect them from the rocks and keep em further up from the mud. I think the big end is stronger
