help.!!!! 77 cj5, brand new rear drive shaft, rear dr. side tire wolble, rear end realy shakes and vibes when clutch is released, sometimes a loud clunk when down shift to first. :handed: what the hell is wrong??????

Pinion angle is the first thing that comes to mind then u-joints. Also if the pinion bearing is bad it will cause a terrible vibe. Dropping to first could be part of the bad u-joint broken t-case mount. axle wrap (going the opposite way). tire wobble sounds like a bent axle shaft or bent rim. Try switching the rim front to back.

yea it was before the new drive shaft i was hopeing the new one would cure it but it start up as soon as i left the shop

I vote for bad wheel bearing on the wobbly one.

Matt

man i apreciat all the words is the pinion angle something i might beable to take care of?? and is there somewhere i can look up the proccess?

If it still has the AMC 20 Rear axle, check to see if the spring mounts have rusted away. I have seen several that have rusted so bad that the axle just pivots back and forth on the ubolts and plates.

Rear axle pinion angle either needs to be 1-2* less than the t-case pinion angle unless you have the rear pinion facing the t-case then it should still be 1-2* less. Does the new ds have a CV shaft and a SYE? That clunking could be some wore out leaf springs collapsing upon decelaration.

Sounds alot like axle wrap to me. As for the wobbling wheel, jack it up and spin it. Any resistance such as bad bearings? If not remove the wheel and re-seat it. If it was installed wrong last time it may not be seated correctly. If the first lug on was overtightened, it can throw the wheel centering off causing what you describe. SB
