So guys I know there are alot of you that have seen my yota and build on here as it has come in the past few years but since im deployed to Afghanistan again lol its time for a new look and wanted you guys opinions.

So tacoma747(michael) once again is going to be bobbing my bed(finally) and a few other goodies like hydro assist, tubbing the front fenders trimming the rear and hopefully enough trimming for some 39s but I cant figure out which way to go.

The part I cant figure out is do i get rid of my tailgate and have my spare mounted at an angle sticking out the back of the bed a few inches. He was going to build a new rear bumper and build it around the edge sticking out to protect the tire but Im not sure if I will always need to carry a spare around. After he bobs the bed I will have exactly 40 inches from the tailgate to the toolbox I am keeping for storage.Enough for a 39 to lay down inside.

So my other option is do I keep the tailgate and lay my spare in the back build astorage rack over the spare (the length of the bed not coming past the top of the bed) and use it for caring things through the trails(coolers etc.) and if i dont need the spare there is room for more storage under the rack.

Just wanted you guys opinions and here are a few pics I have of my truck(dont have many to pick from being out here in afghanistan):

Personally, I wouldnt want a fixed tire mount in the bed because it will limit what you can put in the back. I like the idea of a bed rack where the tire could go underneath and coolers and other stuff could go on top. This would make your bed still useable and keep the tire secure when wheeling.

well i chopped my with the intention of the spare to lay inside the bed with the tail gate. its def cramped for space which kinda sucks for hauling anything but a small cooler and a chair.

I agree here. Unless you use the truck solely for wheeling and never plan to use that bed space again, I'd try and maximize what you can do with it. E.g. just driving aroudn town, there's no point in carrying the spare - it's not like you're going to change a 39' tire on the side of the road at a moments notice.

Having a rack above it would be pretty slick. The only thing I wonder about is, make sure there's enough space to be able to get that thing in and out w/ the rack in place, a 39 is a heavy thing w/o any leverage to grab the middle or sides.

How about building a mount for the tire that keep it level with the top of the bed and you would still have tons of room underneath the tire for storage

That truck looks too nice to hack up

That's what I was thinking. Nice truck. Also don't really see any point for a spare tire to ever leave the trailer, especially something like a 39" tsl. But if you're gonna do it, lay the tire flat and build a fancy dimple died rack over it--you'll still pretty much have the same usable bed space

everyone wants to be like you clayton. maybe we can bob the jeep too.....:shaking:

let me and randy get done leveling it first

put the tire in the bed and build a hinged rack with air cylinders to lift it up for access to the tire. i know you have a compressor, might have to add a tank... plus it would get you some extra points at the next truck show :huggy:

haha, well sounds like I know what route Im going!

I was leaning more towards the rack too since i might be driving this thing to the trails instead of always towing it.

Johnnyb your a funny man homo!lol! It wont be at anymore shows haha!BUT I do like your idea!

I KNOW and figured guys would say its toooo nice to cutt up lol but I have been in spots where a bobbed bed would have been alot easier and its been coming to this for awhile.

As far as the wheels go they are just copperhead fab rock rings welded on to steelies.(no need for beadlocks yet lol)

any of you guys have pics of different bed setups??

Ben, here is a pic of the bed mount I was thinking of. I hope you like my CAD drawing :D I kind of like johnnyb's idea of putting it on a hinge too, only problem with that is if you have stuff strapped to it and need to raise it. I would think you could grab the back of the tire and slide it out the back. Would be harder to push the tire in than it would be to pull it out.

You could mount the tire at an angle and have a bed seperator made out of some tubing that can be removed once tire is taken out so you can use the whole bed and with the tire in i think the coolers and chairs and such will fit between the tire and toolbox just have to try it with a real tire and c how it looks sorry for the sideways pic and the crappy drawing, better at laying everything out in metal

^^^ hey man wish i could see your pic but this stupid government computer wont let me loL!

Yeah michael i like the CAD drawing hahaha!
Well as far as the hinge goes it might still be a good idea (just take the stuff off you have up top) is there anyway you could mount some struts to help???that 39 is going to be a beast to push in with that steel wheel.lol

hahahaha do you know me??????cause your good lol!

funny thing is I talked to dylan and michael both about running my yota through ecors last year i would love to but i think i might get another truck to do that!

should I be scared????hahahaha!
