I'm killing my battery, so I charged it up and removed it for tonight. I noticed earlier today almost a hissing sound but couldn't quite make out where it was coming from. When I was disconnecting the battery I realized that it was the source of the sound.

It's a small sound, like a tiny hiss coming through water, almost a tiny bit bubbly. The battery is an Optima yellow top, and the sound is coming from the 2 little round foam looking things on the top of it. This pic is not my battery, but so yall can see the little round things I'm describing.

What in the hell is my battery doing?

I would check you voltage while the truck is running. You might be overcharging the batter and cooking the inside IIRC you should be operating at something like 13.5 -14.2V.

What amp. are you charging at? The deep cycle batteries should be charged at low amps, 1 to 5. IIRC, when you over amp the acid will "boil" and that will make the noise. The hissing is the gas escaping through the vent holes, the grey disks on top. I am not an expert, but I hope this helps.

An even 14v when the jeep is running, and I charged on 2A trickle. Someone on another forum suggested it has a bad cell. Actually 2 other people. It was making that sound before I began charging it.

Take it back

Do NOT CHARGE THE BATTERY ANY MORE OR INSTALL IT IN YOUR VEHICLE.

If it is bubbling it is a step away from explosion, anyone who has ever seen a battery explode will atest to its discharge force.

Take it back.

Well I went out and checked it a little while ago and the sound has stopped. I haven't read it for voltage yet. I've read that some gassing/venting is normal is the battery gets overcharged. I'm thinking the jump start from my truck might have gotten it started, then the charging process kept it going for a while. I plan to call optima tomorrow and see what they say before I go through the trouble of taking it back.
