Bench Building

What's the recommendation on tubing for a cage on something like this? It's not a full blown rock bouncer but would like to also not die.

You'll be fine with 1.5" .120, that's what I built my Sami buggy with.

The 2.0 is a good engine, main issue is the timing chain and guides. People never change them and then they break. @DirkaDirka875 @clemsonjeep and myself all run the 2.0 engine.

Stock Samurai TC gear ratios are 1.41 high range, and 2.27 high range. It is the only TC I know of that is not 1:1 in high range

I think most land rover transfer cases are also geared lower than 1:1 in high range.

Just some random ones from Pirate that I have seen over the last few years:

Also, alot of folks have had success running SxS tires on these things. They tend to be lighter, with deeper tread and bigger voids, compared to a LT tire. This likely isnt the best move if it is seeing street time though.

@paradisePWoffrd what have heard about the rack and pinion steering on the 99+ models holding up to normal trail abuse with larger tires (32-34")?

Man. This makes me want to find a beat Amigo/Rodeo sport and start cutting. Earlier ones 89-94 are simple machines, but 4cyl manual only. Later 98-03 have v6 and auto option, beefy JK style d44 rear, but rack and pinion steering.

I have not heard. I feel like it is a better solution compared to a box and swing set, but not sure if itll hold up.

Most of the rigs ive seen have been 1st gen, as the 2nd gen doesnt have aftermarket support. Or they have been SAS'd.

Bone stock samurai.
Spool the rear.
Doors off.
Most aggressive stock size tires you can find.
4 to 1 t-case if you want some gearing
Wheel it and grin like a fool all day long.
( there are a couple of you guys that have these hidden in the back of their shops already)

OR ----- ( this is what I wanna do)

When I first started thinking about where I wanted to go with something like this, doing some online browsing; I quickly ran across Cowper Trucks in NZ. Check them out or Suzuki Extreme 4x4 Challenge. Very similar to what we are talking about here, but typically with V8 power, 35" tires.

That is pretty much what I had, but built just a little more. Even with YJ springs, it didn't ride as well as I wanted. Most of that was probably due to the limited up travel of only 2-3". I was thinking the IFS and coil spring suspension of the Track/Kick would ride better for a simple trail rig. Plus cutting up a rig up to the point of only leaving the firewall and floorboards just seems like a boat load of fun.

The link to the Jew Buggy that was posted is pretty much exactly what I have been day dreaming about. It could be done SUPER cheap.

Mine was basically the same thing, but with a little more sheetmetal. I want to say I had less than $2000 in mine. Purchased it for $500; got it running good; gutted as much as i wanted; welded diffs; caged it; bought tires. Had almost as much in tires as the rest of it.

Front what I am seeing is that the whole SxS front end is difficult to pull off. The T-Rex thing would look a lot better without the headlight deal. So in the vein of the copper crawler. How, would would skin the front to give it a good looking body. I need something that is going to look good at the mall.
