I'm looking for suggestions on the best all terrain tire that you guys like on your tow rig. I have a 2006 silverado 2500hd with a durmax, the truck is completely stock and sees alot of road miles as it is the daily driver, but my driveway is a 1/4 mile long dirt road that gets pretty nasty when it rains and the wife uses the truck to tow her horse trailer to shows and alot of places she parks are in pastures. So I need an all terrain for those times. I was running the brand new BFG All Terrain KO2's and they are garbage. 17,000 miles and one year later and they are already bald!! I rotate the tires at every oil change which is between 5,000 to 7,000 miles. Now I know I'm not gonna get 80,000 miles out of all terrains but I should get better than 17,000!!!! So I'm looking for recommendation, any help would be appreciated thanks.

I ran Dick Cepek FC-II's for a while and was very impressed with the road manners and the offroad traction for an all terrain. Can't really comment on the true longevity of the tread, as I never get more than about 15-20k miles out of anything because of my right foot. They definitely lasted longer than the Nitto Terra Grapplers that I had on my superduty.

Just make sure you get a tire in the right load range for that heavy of a truck. A tire designed to run on a toyota or ranger won't last on a 2500.

My trail grapplers on my 07 2500 have around 40k on them and around 1/4 tread left. I know they're mud terrains but thought I'd put it out there in case you're interested.

only have around 15000 miles on them so far, but i put some GoodYear DuraTracs E-rated on my Super-Duty diesel and have zero wear to them with good road manners and pretty good off road traction around the farm...the only thing I will warn you about them is that they are super heavy and lost a mile per gallon or better but I believe I would still buy them again...more expensive than the the Nitto Terra Grapplers that only gave me 20000 plus miles and much cheaper than the Toyo's Mudders that were just too much for what I do with the truck

I'm looking at getting the Cooper ST Maxx. They have some nice, deep tread and they look awesome. A buddy of mine got a set a few months ago, so I can't comment on much, but I like Cooper tires so I'm gunna give them a shot. They'll be going on my Duramax as well. I just can't decide if I'm keeping the stock rims or getting some H2s. I'll either be getting a 285/75-16 or a 285/70-17. Although, the 295/70-17 has a much higher load capacity....it's a little too tall for me.

Do the H2s!!!! By far my favorite wheels on a duramax.

Thank you all for the suggestions, im going to give the Toyo AT2's a try, theu have a 50,000 mile warranty. I do like the H2 wheel idea also. Going to have to start looking for a set of those. Thanks again.

The ST Maxx doesn't have a mileage warranty, but the AT3 carries a 55k tread wear on them. Food for thought.

When I was broke....H2s were everywhere. Now that I have money, I can't find a decent set to save my ass!

Not to hijack the OP's thread...but I just picked up a nice set of H2s yesterday for 275. I was really looking for some regular satin ones, but came across the chrome ones and figured "why the hell not?". They'll look decent on a black truck, I think.

Anyway, I was looking at tires again last night and while I really want the ST Maxx from Cooper, I just can't decide for sure. The AT3 is less expensive and the specs are all around the same as far as load rating, load range, etc...the new Toyo AT II is right in there with them as well.

Thoughts?

Oh, I know how they work. I don't particularly care about mileage warranties anyway. I keep my tires rotated and aired up, they'll wear how they wear and I can't do much more than that. It does depends on where you buy them though. If I bought some Coopers from my local dealer and they wore like hell, I'd definitely have them adjusted accordingly and make them eat some of the cost of another set.

I'll throw in my 0.02 for Hankook Dynapro ATMs. I just out a set of C-range on my Denali, and in the few hundred miles I've out in them, I'm happy. Nice open tread, but still quiet and not squirmy on the dry road. I've had them on nasty muddy snowy mountain roads last weekend and snowy city streets this past weekend, and they really impressed me. Even if they slip, it isn't much. They're cheaper than a lot of the alternatives, have a good treadwear rating, and are available in an E-range. Look at them if you haven't already.

I have a 14' CCLB Ram 2500 diesel usually pulling a 20' trailer. I wanted bigger tires so I picked up a set a Dynapros at the beginning....well they constantly shook and I repeatedly had to take the truck back to Discount Tire to have the tires rebalanced. They were originally balanced using sticky weights and ended with hammer on weights both inside and outside the wheel. I finally got fed up and had the store remove all the weights and show how out of balance the tires were, one tire required 4oz outside and 6oz inside which is ridiculous for a new AT tire. Salesman told me that they were a "bargain" tire and that I should upgrade, so I left the store with a set of the new BFG ATs. Well shortly after I made the trip out to Windrock with the trailer loaded w two sxs, upon returning to NC I was unloading the trailer and noticed that the rear tires appeared to be feathered front to back and the tire was opening up the tread siping (larger gap between tread blocks on the rear than the front). Took the truck back to Discount and they performed their "investigation" and concluded that it must be an alignment issue so I took the truck to the dealer and had it checked. Dealer said that the alignment was spot on and saw no reason for the tires to be wearing in that manner. Headed back to Discount and spoke w the manager there (Bruce @ the concord mills store), he said that he would provide two new rear tires no questions asked but I didn't feel that the tires were going to hold up. After asking around some I came to find that most people had nothing but good things to say about the Toyo AT2's. I had the manager order me a set (even though they don't even carry Toyo) and I couldn't be happier. The Toyos are hands down the best tires that I've had on the truck so far, made a trip to Hatfield with the trailer and had no issues with feathering (like the BFG) or shaking (like the Hankook). On a side note.....if you're in the Concord area and looking for tires, make a stop by Discount Tire by the mall, the manager bent over backwards to make sure that me and my truck were happy with their store.

I know this is an old thread but I just had something happen to me that is well worth sharing that might be worth a look...have some 35x12.50 BFG KM2s on a LJ I picked up a while back. Ever since I got it, the tires would start vibrating horribly once above 60mph or so...took it to a local tire shop where they do a lot with big rigs and they swore by tire beads to fix the balance issue...and well they could not have been any more spot on...i'm assuming this will transfer over to any larger size AT or MT tire

they are $20 a tire but well worth it

Ran two sets of Terra Grapplers on my 06 2500 CTD got around 40k out of both sets with alot of heavy towing (skidsteer or mini ex and 10k+ boats) switched it up this time and tried the Cooper ST Maxx i like em so far a little slippery the first 2500 miles or so on the road but theyve grown outta that. Have about 7500 on them now and like the traction when on jobsites and in the woods and not too noisy on the road hopefully ill get 40k at least out of em

Toyo open country at or rt I have the rt little more aggressive than a at but 45k mile warranty
x1000

I run Toyo Open Country AT2 on my dually. Got probably quarter tread left and have about 45,000 miles on them.

I run Toyo Open Country HT on my Subaru and they do great as well.
