just redid my CJ half cab top - its a cut down full hard top minus the side windows. It cracked in some places when the body flexed and it didn't. anyway. there are some spots on the interior where I can't get the orbital sander (inside upper corners) and to be honest I want to just spray over it to cover the not so pretty spots since well, its a CJ top, but dont want it to look Fullered either. so I'd like to spray it with something like undercoating to cover it up and roll. but Im afraid that A) I can't top coat over undercoat and I dont want it to be black, and B) Im afraid it will be too 'soft' when it gets hot

whatcha got?

Why can't you top coat over undercoating? It's done all the time on production cars in fenderwells and on rocker panels and underneath most of the unibody on many cars. All 3 cars in my driveway have painted undercoating. Your Legacy should have painted undercoating on it if you want to check out how hard it is, etc.
Just get the right type of undercoating, one that's paint-able. Fuller would use DIY bedliner, in whatever color is on sale.

See, problem solved. :D

If you don’t mind some texture raptor liner is an option. Sprays on easy and can be tinted to any color you like. Even though it’s textured it’s a lot smoother compared to other Bedliner options. Here is a few quick pics I found on my phone of my Jeep I painted with it and tinted it tan. Sorry pics are not the best. If your interested I could get some better close up pics tomorrow.

This stuff gets pretty hard too!

did my M100 trailer bed in Raptor. not a big fan for this application- plus its $$ although I have a bottle of it left over. did herculiner in my CJ3A tub, again not quite what Im looking to do. wondering about a brush on oil/enamel hit with a high nap roller… my experience with undercoat is that it stays goowy forever. I understand thats what its supposed to do, but not cool for what I need it for. tends to not wash off too well and this top will see lots of slung up mud from doors-off antics. I guess Im looking for something like what a boat looks like on the 'inside' - the sprayed on chopped-fiber-broken-up texture. my buddy did a boat one time with sand between layers of wet paint. that was cool but only to make the deck slip free.
