Looking for suggestions on an upholstery shop to do a boat interior. I've spoken with Lake Norman Tops and Carolina Upholstery, would love to talk to 4 or 5 different places to get an idea of the individual styles and techniques available before making a decision. Anyone have a favorite?

Oh I thought you were looking for a place to get some Dress Blues adjusted... o_O:D

/got nothin'

I stared at the title for a minute and thought- I wonder if I'll get any military smart remarks. Lol.

First post, I probably should edit the title.

I can't tell you the best.
I can tell you the worst.

There is a dude named Nate or Nathan Schmucker in Mooresville. He used to call his company Teakwood Marine.

He redid a bass boat for me 2 years ago and I am absolutely convinced my 2 Labradors could have done a better job. Not only did the carpet have huge seams needlessly, he also destroyed a fiberglass console so bad it couldnt be rebuilt. I dont know how. I think he trimmed the carpet with a chainsaw. No I am not joking. Well only half. He used some small electric chainsaw to cut the wood trim that held the carpet in place and ended up gouging the fiberglass.

Stay far the fawk away from this fawker.

I've been pointed to a place in Knoxville, TN as one of the better shops around. Surprisingly enough they are competitively priced to some of the places around Charlotte. Trying to justify two 9 hour road trips- would rather go local if possible.

I wish I could give you a better lead here. But there is a guy near you that is great, but he aint cheap.
The best way I can get you in touch is call Denver Marine and ask who they recommend for custom upholstery work. Their guy is right near the 16/150 intersection. He is good. But ...

I've got a few places bookmarked, I'll check on my home laptop. One of the guys shows up in the street rod magazines all the time.

I'm getting ready to drop some stuff off from my boat to a lady up in Denver. Her and her husband have a boat repair shop in the the Denver Industrial Park The stuff I have her doing is just basic Fishing boat stuff so nothing fancy. Her prices are very good. I'm too lazy to go get her card out of my truck but I'll get you the info tomorrow.

I would only go to Carolina upholstery talk to Andy they do great work it is their busy season so you might have a little trouble getting in but it's worth it

I actually talked to those guys before I posted up here. They came highly recommended, I just haven't seen any of their work. I was told to text Andy some pictures, which I did, now just waiting on a quote.

I'll give the hot rod shop a call too.

Here's some work from the Knoxville shop- looking for something comparable in the Carolinas:

Any body know the place on Hwy 115, just as you enter Davidson? It's an old building, & the place has been there for years, but I've never stopped in.
Found it + Howell & Sons Canvas Repair!

If you want to see there work I would just swing by there some time there is always hot rods in there and at least 5 boats Andy is a super nice guy and I am sure he has books of pics of there work. What are you wanting done a boat?

Hot Rod interiors by Chuck is one in the same as Lake Norman Tops and interiors. Chuck is a good guy and does top notch work, but don't expect to leave without dropping a small fortune (at least for the hot rod interiors, never dealt with his boat end of things). As an example, @REDLYNER you know that 73 Camaro we are finishing up at the shop? (the Lamborghini california orange one) To do the interior similar to what he has in that car, Genuine leather with ostrich inserts, all custom panels and finished trunk would run about $16-18K out of Chuck's shop. Don't get me wrong, if you want over the top and totally crazy Chuck is the man, but be prepared to pay a pretty penny.

Most of the guys I know have focused more on automotive and don't get into too many boats.

You could check out Carolina upholstery in Ft. Mill. I've not used them but they came highly recommended When I asked around about a bench seat I'm wanting recovered.

Fuck Andy. I took him some couch cushions to recover. He said it would take 2 days. 4 days later, after not being able to get him on the phone, I went back and picked up my untouched cushions. I'll say it again, Fuck Andy. He's a straight up liar in my book.

I can quote, if you just want another idea of cost; I'm <9 hours but prolly not practical-- Need some pics to give you an idea...
You can save a few $$ by pulling the interior yourself, if so inclined.

As said, entering into 'season' so things take longer/more expensive
(should have dropped boat off Oct/Nov when we all slow down and look for 'winter work'

I would be curious as to what they charged for that Mastercraft, I'll bet it was a lot more than you might expect.

Fell free to pm if I can help/advise at all...

If you need home furniture upholstery, a good friend of mine in York is the man.
Let me know and I can introduce ya

I'd be interested in a price. I was so frustrated with carolina upholstery I haven't even looked for another shop.

Have you thought about replacement skins? I looked at a X-star about the same year as yours before we bought our X2. It needed new seats and carpet. I got some quotes online for a complete set of seat skins for around $2000-$2500 if I remember correctly. You take the old ones off, they make the new ones off of those, and they send you back a complete set of new skins. You had some options on color and piping. Just a thought.

I'm doing a full interior replacement, and my current ones are about a year over due. Mastercraft only makes vinyls for about 5 years before a discontinue. New skins from MC are $5k plus install, so I'm going with custom- which I'm being told are a higher quality anyway.

Chuck already gave me a quote- didn't realize he was the hot rod guy. His price is actually on the lower end that I've seen. But since all of the numbers I'm seeing are pretty close, I'm trying to learn more about the work the shops have turned out. The info so far in this thread is exactly what I was looking for.
