Best Metal Prices

I have bought from several different distributors over the last several years but I am always searching for the best prices. I live in the Kernersville area and wanted to know which supplier other people are using.

Most of the time I order 3/16”, ¼” sheets of steel and also 2x2 (1/4” thick wall) and 1x1 (1/4” thick wall).

Let me know the best prices that you’ve found on steel.

thanks

I go through race city steel as a hobbyist. They give me rates sometimes 65% less than others and they will deliver to my house. Excellent company to deal with.

I use to buy from Ryerson before my account manager got changed and now they say that there is a minimum cost order. So, I've looked into other options in the Winston-Salem, High Point and Greensboro area

Exactly
what is the minimum cost to an order. It used to be no minimum.

Exactly, that's why I always done business with them. My original account manage never gave me any problems about that. However, when I went to order from them last year, they new account manager stated that there was a purchase minimum. I cant recall the exact number but I don't want to buy more than what I need so I went else where.

I have gone to Jones Metal Works, fishel steel, metal supermarkets (new in GSO). Never been hit with a minimum order remark when I tell them what I want but I try to work with the person so they don't have to go out and cut something and mess up the chance of them selling an entire 20 ft stick of tubing when I only need two 8' pieces.

I don't think "best price" really has much of an influence as metal prices fluctuate. Also if the metal shop is cool I ask to go out to their scrap pile and find pieces that I can work with instead of buying something right off of the rack. Fishel Steel and Jones Metal Works will let you do that.

Nick, Ill have to check those two places out. I usually buy the 10' or 20' even if I don't need all of it.
I know theres a new company off of I-40 in gboro. I may have to call there and see what their prices are.

I had similar issues with Ryerson recently. Additionally, I used to buy a lot of steel from them, cash account, paid up front. Now, they want credit checks and accounts set up at their regional office before they will sell, even on prepaid sales. I just quit dealing with them.

I've found Dillon Supply to be reasonably priced

Dillon in Winston is good for some things. Solid stock, square tube, angle, plate. I've had good luck with them personally. Advanced Metals in Archdale has decent prices and a great selection of odd sizes, but will also sell shorts. Whatever you do, always call around. A few minutes invested in price-checking can yield surprising discrepancies in pricing.
