After a few problems with my damn safety glasses letting my eyes take metal.

I ordered this sheild off amazon for 12 dollars shipped prime and got it in a day n a half. Fits tight to face but doesnt fog when you breath. New sheilds are 2 dollars when this one is scratched to hell.
Its sad how excited i am over a sheild showing up last night.

Highly recommend everyone stop trusting safety glasses for grinding.

Very cool. I've had 2 FBRs performed and made a pledge it'll never happen again.

X2 on link

I usually wear a face shield with glasses when grinding or using the chop saw. I hate how the glasses fog. It'd be nice to not have the fog

Is that the 3M one? That's what I have - I think they call it the Bionic or something like that. I ordered a new shield for mine from Amazon a few weeks ago.

When I ordered it it didn't say 3m anywhere but when I got it it did and it was the Bionic 2x or something like that I have to look at the box

The one in the pic in the OP clearly has a UVEX logo

Looks nice but I like to wear a respirator when grinding. I've settled on goggles. Safety glasses are garbage. Metal in the eye is no fun- especially having to stare at a computer screen during the day.

I have worn safety glasses my whole adult life. I can attest to the suck. I have 8 scars from metal in one eye alone. I have had pieces drilled and could see the hole in my eye tissue days afteward. I commonly now grind with a face shield and glasses. But I really like the look of this design. Problem with glasses is the projectile bouncing of tissue hitting the inside of the lense then strait to the eye.

I can wear my 3m respirator under this one pretty easily and I know that was 3 m

again, is it possible to wear ear muffs?
I've found the simple flat curve face-shield style work ok, but that looks like the sides wrap around pretty far to the ears?

3M N95 dust mask and a pair of ear plugs. I like the kind that are hooked together with a cord.

Yeah I need me a good multipurpose respirator too... Since we're on the subject what are you guys using/recommend?

I swear by a miller/elipse p100 respirator.

Low profile enough to fit under my shield.

High flow enough to not restrict airflow even when dirty.

Comfortable enough to wear all day.

Before I used 3m n95/p100 stuff but once they start to collect debris, the restrict the air flow far too much.

This causes you to breathe harder and harder, while doing the same task, which is not good.

I use respirators daily in and under houses, and frequently at night for welding & grinding.

The biggest problem I have with respirators while grinding is the necessity to wear a face mask.

If you wear a respirator with safety glasses only, you will collect metal dust on the bridge of your nose, and the top of your cheeks where the mask meets your face.

Then any amount of air movement by wind or even the cooling fan in the grinder can push all that dust under your glasses and into your eye.

Why not use one of the face mask and respirator combos, like painters sometimes use? You can get cheaper filter cartridges that don't have all of the vapor protection needed while painting, so they are a cost effective way to get really good dust protection and a mask in one.

That's a good point, but

Those are around $100 and up, meanwhile a facesheild and separate respirator is around $50. Haven't seen a single one of these that will fit under a welding shield.

Again, none of these are high flow enough for physical activity after getting dirty,

The amount of filter area open on the miller/elipse is far greater than anything else on the market due to pleated design.

Most n95/p100 3m stuff has a giant filter cartridge but air opening is maybe 1" or so. I'll have to grab some pics of the difference this afternoon.

Essentially once the center 1" starts to clog with debris, airflow is severely restricted.

Nothing worse than hyperventilating in a confined space, and having to talk yourself out of panicking, while trying to exit with tunnel vision all due to a dirty respirator.

The miller/elipse solves this with the pleated filters with a much larger exposed area.

The cost to value is hard to be at $20 per face shield and $30 per respirator. And that's the first time buy.

Cost after that is much lower as you can just buy replacement lenses or filters for around $10.

When switching from prep to weld, I just remove face shield, and put on my welding helmet. I don't have to remove respirator or safety glasses. I can't do that with a combo shield/respirator.

As well there are times where I will grind with glasses and respirator only, without full shield. Just wanted to warn those starting to prep/grind with respirator and safety glasses, that the probability of metal in your eye without a shield goes up.

As well, all of elipse filter products fit the miller/elipse mask, and IIRC they have a wide selection available.

Yep, the cord is a must. Although technically you are not supposed to yank on the cord to pop them out, the pressure change is bad for your tympanic membrane. Hard to resist that urge.
Biggest problem I have w/ the plugs is (aside form the fact I hate the way they make my head feel) is that if my fingers are dirty, which they almost always are by the time I'm grinding something, that grit gets on the plugs and in my ears.

You know, I have some nice active noise cancelling headphones I use on airplanes, they are great for taking out contact noise. At least in theory they'd also work for a grinder once it spins up.

Isn't that a problem that runs in your family? I seem to recall a similar complaint about electrical receptacles.

I like the kind with the cord mostly because they're easier to put in than the foam kind, and I can pull them out and let the cord hang around my neck if I need to hear something.

This is what I was looking at when I asked. It looks pretty low profile. I have always used the white dust mask type. I'm gonna order me one of these.

After using a "real" respirator, I only keep a pack of the cheap white ones on hand to give to friends for quick one-time jobs. Or costume masks. There is no comparison.

It actually wasn't 3m but had a logo that resembled it at a glance on the box.

I use this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000...respirator&dpPl=1&dpID=41h0wH0DqbL&ref=plSrch

Altho i think i am going to order the miller one bc it looks alot slimmer.

As for big earphones minendidnt fit right with sheild on. I rarely use ear plugs or anything. Definatly another thing i need to address when in the shop. But upgrading my harbor freight welding sheild is my next buy lol.
