The 350 in my work truck started knocking this morning so it's parked. It's a '96 Chevy with the 5.7 Vortec. I have a local guy who I'm sure will rebuild it but I'm looking at all options right now. Money is a BIG factor because times are tough...real tough lately.
I'm in Charlotte of course.
Thanks

What about "stitching" of cracked heads? I checked with Crossroads Speed and he has a rebuilt motor and he said that most Vortec heads are cracked and the cracks have to be "stitched" back together.

why not a stock replacement from Chevrolet ? 36month 100k warranty ( includes labor )

and it's NEW, not reman or rebuilt.

as long as the install was done correctly ( meaning nothing was forgotten or rigged ) your engine is covered, no matter who installs it.

For the cost, it's not a bad way to got.

sucks for the tech that gets the job, but good for the customer.
and really, you aren't going to find a reman or rebuild that will give you the same deal ( Jasper is a joke, replaced many "new" Jasper remans )

Or fawk, just any old used motor. I've got to think that's cheaper than a rebuild.

Reman or new crate

The best place I found around Greensboro or Winston Salem is pilot engines in mount pilot I have had five motors done by them and I am satisfied with there work 3 351 clevlands and 2 chevy 350 4 bolt main motors they are reasonable on the prices as well

My motor is under the knife now being rebuilt by the guy that does most of my work. So many of these remanneds have questionable parts in them and repaired heads. My heads are going to be checked out and reused if good or replaced with new ones if bad.
Good thing is I trust this guy and I can stop by any time I want to see how things are going.
Once I researched the remanned motors I just wasn't comfortable with them.

I know you already sent your engine in, but in case some newbie ever searches, I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents...

Kannapolis Engine Service in China Grove,NC has good prices on rebuilt engines.

Any time I've dealt with them, not a bad experience, but not a great one either. Take 'em or leave them IMO.

my buddy and his dad have gotten both there 350's from Poteat Motors i think there out of china grove or some where in that area. there motors come with a 12 month 12k mile warrenty.

I'm not really fond of these guys, I've used them for a couple head rebuilds...take for frickin ever...standard rebuilds, to stock specs on Ford 400 heads, one took 2 weeks, the other took 3 weeks. Both of those rebuilds ended up with bent valves within a few months and the next guy I brought them to said the seats looked terrible. This was in a daily driven rig, so no crazy driving.

In the past I've had a couple 460's built by Melvin Pepper of Peppers Garage, in Salisbury...couldn't have been happier. But I dunno if he's still in the biz or not.

Now I use John Betts, has a small garage...but killer work at a killer price. His address is Salisbury, but it's closer to Mooresville.

It's still in the shop. The machine shop was backed up but my guy got the motor back today so he'll be putting it back together starting this evening and tomorrow. I guess I'll have it back by the weekend.

UPDATE!

Update...believe it or not. Got the motor/truck back several months ago and it ran great but used some oil. Talked to the mechanic and he was in and out of the hospital and asked me to just watch it until he got straightened out. Okay no problem.
Took the truck back to him a few weeks ago and it was using a good bit of oil so he's going to re-rebuild it at no cost.
After disassembling it, he cannot find out why it's using oil. Everything checks out good. We reused the original heads because they checked out good at the machine shop.
After much investigation, he thinks either the heads are bad or the intake is cracked. It's $200 a piece to xray the heads and $240 each for new heavy duty Bortec (I know it's not Bortec but the letter that I need won't work on my keyboard and spellcheck wont help this time...lol) ones so it's a no brainer to just get the new ones.
We are trying to decide what to do now and what else it could possibly be.
Anybody ever run into this?
