daddy will be driving our motor home towing his yota up there, so whats the best way to go? yahoo maps has us taking I-40 to US 74 to US 19 business, but it obviously isnt very detailed on how curvy the roads are and how steep the grades are. any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you stay at Crawford's, take I-40 to US 74. That will get you to Murphy. US 74 follows a river for a good stretch, so it does have some curves. The road from Murphy to Crawford's is very curvy as well. It will be slow going with a motor home through that part.

With a motor home that's about your best bet. I 40 to 19 then stay on that until you get into Murphy. You can also go thru Franklin and by pass a lot of the curves and the Nantahala curves and traffic, but there isn't much of a difference. I definatly wouldn't recomend the scenic route thru Robinsville, Very steep climb and Very curvy once you get on the gravel part.

i does get a litte curvy in nantahala and on the road goin to crawfords. just take it slow and steady

Tellico

I have towed my rig with the motor home more than once to Crawfords. The roads are four lane to Murphy. From Murphy to Crawfords it will very curvy and narrow, just take you time and stay on your side of the road. Going through Robbinsville will not be a problem if you are used to towing in the mountains, but you will have to run the parkway out of Robbinsville to Tellico Plains, TN and then into the OHV area if you motor home is very big. Mine is 38 ft long and 102" wide, so I have never gone that way. If your rig is smaller you can run the parkway to the bridge just over the Tn line on the parkway and turn down the dirt road, which comes out at Spiivey Cove camp ground.

Crawfords will be your best bet.

I miss spoke, it is two lane throught Natahala on to Andrews. Good road though, about 15 miles.

I have heard rumors that if you tow from the TN side to Crawfords, using trail one. The L.E. will stop you and search your coolers, handing out fines for unopened beers. :(

From Charlotte I go I-85 to I-26 to I-40 to 74 into Murphy, then up Hanging-Dog (I love that road).

That one set of switchbacks/uphill coming from TN to NC on trail one would be TOUGH (impossible?) for any large motorhome, heck a 2wd tow rig pulling a load might have issues?

The routes mentioned above are what I have taken and Crawfords is prob best bet UNLESS you want to stay on the TN side which is much closer to the trailheads...honestly if I had a motorhome I would be exploring how to come in on the TN side so I didn't have to ride trail 1 an hour or more every day I was down there!

the trailer will obviously be more of the concern than the motorhome...

I drive the 35,000lb church bus (like charter bus size) up to Nantahala every year and it's not very "fun" to drive on the roads, especially coming back down, but it's not too bad at all...

I KNOW you cant make that swithbacks w/ a crewcab and 28ft trailer

Last Winter I followed Larry and another Trail Blazer out thru the Tn side. Larry had no problems, Kenneth was pulling with a 4 door dulley and a 30' gooseneck. The bridges are what was fun to wath him go thru. When he went as far as he could go before he had to turn to miss the ditch, the back end of his gooseneck would srub the rails on the bridge pretty hard. Good thing it was a well built trailer!
