I got a set of 36x14.5x16 truxus sts I was considering putting on my 1980 toyota. It has a 20r, L54 transmission and stock axles with 4:37 gears. Would it put too much of a strain on my drive train?

It will be a gutless slug. There is a guy on here selling a 4.7 t case that would work well for ya if your plan is to wheel it. I wouldn't recommend using it as a dd or mall crawler.

x2 if it was an RE with a 5spd it'd be slow but it's no where near as slow as a 20R 4spd will be.

Also 36's is pushing it on stock birfields, if you want to run 36's and not break alot some new shiney parts are in your future.

With 33x12.50's its already pretty slow, tops out at 75mph but it's killer offroad. Never had any problems or bad breaks out on the trails. It has a L54 tranny which is a 5 speed and a matching transfer case out of a later model toyota. I don't really do too much trail riding as I dont have a lot of time. I usually only drive this truck to school, or into town. I've been told 5:29's would be my best bet if I was wanting to go with bigger tires.

The 4.37s help you out alot, 4.10s are the most common in later yotas. Yes 5.29 will be needed to make it streetable with 36's. I'd also look at trading the sts for something a little different, those suck pretty much just like thunder chickens.

x2 on the birfields. I did really well aired down 33s on stock ones. I couldn't keep them together with 36s. I damaged my knuckles and housing churning broken parts around in there. I didn't really care because a spare axle is waiting to go in. I have no gears and drive like I am running for my life most of the time.

This is my DD and I agree regearing would be needed if I wanted to do it right and not have to worry about power loss and things breaking. I don't really do much offroading anymore, i'll go hit a mud hole with some friends every now and then but not often. As for the Truxus, I got a set of them about half treat for $50. I couldn't say no to that deal. I've heard a lot of negative things about them, but for looks, I really like the tread style. I was mainly planning on running these 36's in the mean time while I get my new tires. The 33x12.50 Dunlop mud rovers I have on it now are pretty worn. It would just kind of be an in between thing while I save up the money for a new set of tires.
