Sat. Nov 13 I'd like to get some guys together and go check this out. I've only heard it is a beginner trail and has beautiful views and only open during Hunting season.

1. My gf and I want to go with someone whose been if not don't be mad if I get us somewhat lost :driver: I'm pretty sure I can find it.

2. We can meet at Backcountry Outdoors Bike shop in Pisgah Forest they have beer now. Yes in a bicycle shop there is beer.

A four wheeled adventure will soon bring you happiness.

Nov 13 is the ECORS race/free ride at DPG only open about 6 times a year come check it out!

What road at Black Balsam? The one that goes from the parking lot out to the wilderness border and back? It's a graded dirt road.

This should be the end of the road:

The views are nice, but it's not much of a drive. If you're able, the hike over Tennett Mtn and Black Balsam isn't bad. There are a couple of different ways to loop it.

Black Balsam(Shining Rock)

Good place to go ride, only a few miles from my place, the road is rocky and grown up! Has not been graded in years. We rode in a couple of times last month!

I'm interested to know what road this is as well. I've been to Black Balsam many a time to hike. One of my favorite places. I never knew there was a drive-able road there. I might be in if I can talk the wife into it. Still thinking the 20th?

Turn off the parkway at the access road for the Black Balsam parking lot. The road's about a mile long and ends in a small parking lot with an outhouse. A dirt road continues roughly north along the side of the mountain. There's a gate a hundred feet or so past the edge of pavement. The road runs from there out to a saddle between ... I think it's Tennet Mountain and Shining Rock. That's where the wilderness starts.

Here's a map

Oh, I always wondered where that went. I never walk it because everything else in that area looks so much more interesting. That's def out towards Tennet Mtn. I didn't know you could drive it at times. It doesn't look very long though...

We camped and rode around a bit last year around mid November. Super nice area. About a 1/4 or 1/2 mile past the curve in the first picture there was a nasty off camber washout that halted our progress. I saw no way to pass through without having a winch line on the uphill side to keep from rolling. I'd heard that it goes down to a stream but cannot confirm. Nice trail but not difficult. It opens annually August 1 and closes when the parkway does. FYI parkway is closed from 191 to 151 out of Asheville.

Yeah, I think you're right about the creek. There's a trail that forks off down the side... then follows the creek back to Camp Daniel Boone. Not a bad hike, either, we did that as part of our Cold Mountain loop.

Need to check the map... but if it drops off the mtn, it probably goes east toward 276. I don't remember crossing any roads down in there, though.
