So I havent been feeling well for the past month or so, been very lathargic with shortness of breath, headaches, bloody boogers (gross I know), and dizzyness... I have been renting the place I am in now for a lil over 2 years and noticed the other day in the shower these little black spots in small and large circular patters on the ceiling at the end of the shower that used to be really faint are really dark now.

The place I live in is old and there is no ventilation for the shower so it gets very damp in there from the moisture so I am almost postive it is black mold!

I looked up the symptons and pics of the black mold and have totally freaked myself out cause I think I have been inhaling this for quite some time. Not to mention in my living room there is a leak behind the wall from a hole in the ceiling which Im sure has large amounts of mold. :shaking:

Has anyone ever dealt with this before? I am making a Drs appointment Monday and getting checked (which I have no health insurance!). Next step will to bring it to the landlords attention and plans to take action.

Does anyone know a good Dr. in the Charlotte area as well as are they any applications out there for testing for this toxic mold?

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I've had asthma/breathing ptoblems from birth. Mold is something I have to stay away from. We lived in a house that had a basement with a dirt floor and mold was a big problem. We didn't stay there long because I stayed sick. With the home issues you listed, the mold problem will be hard to fix.

Good luck.

I would look for a new place to live. But, I also know how hard that can be. Hope you figure out what is wrong with your ASAP.

Yea i think it is beyond repair... sucks too cause I love the place :-(

That happened to us. Not the same area, but black mold. kids were staying sick, wife sick and finally I was getting sick. everything we use under our kitchen sink was always right there at the door. one day i was looking for something and looked under the sink. come to find out i had a water leak for who knows how long because everything under my sink was covered in black mold. i know my area is different than your. i went and bought a half way decent vent mask, tons of cheap ass rags and i cant remember what formula i used to srub it all down. since then everyone has been fine except the wife catching the flu. My .02, find a new place to lay your head down at night.

No need for most people to see a doc. Just kill the mold and you should get better.

BTW - Bleech kills mold, so easy and cheap.

Ya my neighbor deals with this daily. He is one of those mold guys. He told me to stay away from bleach as most of the time it won't kill it. He gave me a website to get a formula off if it to kill mold. I will have to find it and post it up.

Sent from my microwave using a teleportation device.

mold is like anything else. it needs water and food to survive. If colonies of mold spores are present and it is a certain type of mold then there can be heath risks. The first thing you need to do is to have an air test done. They will be able to determine the type of mold you have. Your land lord should call some one to have this done. Depending on his insurance policy, he may be covered for the testing and repairs. Call Allied Restoration at 704-377-1661. Ask to speak to John Wood. He is the mitigation and remediation manager. He can answer your questions on where to get it tested and what to do. Tell him that Brad Banks told him to call you. You can not really kill mold by the way. You can either cause it to go dormant or remove it or encapsulate it.Either way you choose will not matter unless you fix the moisture problem, otherwise it will come back

Borax will kill it.
The spores from dead mold will still affect your health, so after you kill it you need to clean it (for non porous surfaces) or seal it in with a good primer/paint (for porous surfaces). Home Depot will add a moldicide to your primer for about a buck.

But if you've got a wall full of it and the landlord doesn't want to take down the sheetrock I'd be looking for a new place.

I live in a place that was built in 1910, and I have the same spots on my bathroom ceiling. It is black mold. I mix a cup of bleach with water in an old windex bottle (rinse it out first). Spray it down and it will disappear. Comes back over the course of a month or two, and I spray it again.

If you can't move, and if your landlord wont do anything to fix the mold and ventilate the bathroom... just keep a bottle of bleach and water handy, and buy a good HEPA air purifier. And dont disturb the mold without a mask on.

not all mold is harmful...

Actually, nearly 100% of houses have mold in them but only a small percentage have the bad stuff that is harmful. Get it checked out before you go callin the landlord. Or, call him and discuss getting it checked out. If its bad stuff, you'll need to move or get him to fix it.

Not sure, but I think if the PPM is above a certain level, the city/county can condemm the house due to the bad black mold.

Get it checked out soon!

the ceiling in my bathroom had a spot of black mold in it .I decided to clean it with bleach and a rag no mask "Because I am MAN " . The next day I felt like I was going to die High fever and vomiting . Hired a handy man to replace said ceiling and remove mold .
I will never mess with it ever again that is BaDDDDD stuff!!!

This got a laugh out of me cause I was going to do the same thing with the same mentality! Good thing for the internet!

Yea I hear bleach is the way to go. There is no ventilation so Im sure it will be back. Ill clean it and notify the landlords of it but Im sure they will not want to do anything about it.. Dont get me wrong, they are great people but this isnt a contract rental just an agreement b/w friends so if they have to shell out a lot of money then they will probably just ask me to move on...

We were having some problems with mold/or something on the ceiling of our bathroom. We had to install a vent fan. That has really helped clear up the problem. Then we painted over what was there with killz and regular paint. The fan a really made a huge difference in that bathroom.

My wife takes HOT showers. I think she takes them with the water as hot as it can be. There would be water everywhere in the bathroom and the mirror would be coated. Now, that we have the fan, none of that! No water anywhere the mirror is not even fogged up.
So that might be something that will help your bathroom.

Maybe if you pay for the upgrades yourself they would be willing to take it off of that months rent.
