Black mountain of Fancy gap, which do you prefer??

Hoping to get out to the Liberty Antique sale myself; I missed it the last couple of years.
This will be our first year there,They cancelled our sale at HIllsville VA so we thought we'd try Liberty this year.

Another vote for fancy gap.

Once your past Asheville there really isn't much in the way of towns or exits so if you have issues and have to go get parts is a long ordeal.

From raleigh to winrock it adds about 20 min to the drive. I'll take the 20 min hit to the arrival time for a much easier tow.
I'm 60 miles from Asheville and it takes me 1.5 to get there. It's almost all two lane mountain road.I hate goin to Asheville, there's no easy way to get there from here.

Had to look at it in a map. The only direct route to Asheville is the two lanes through the mountains. Doesn't look fun if your towing.

yeah thats the way I usually go,I've pulled that multiple times after midnight w a trailer and thankfully never had any problems.I can go to Newport TN and get on 40 and go over the mnt but that adds 30 mins or so to the trip.

It's been my experience, that it can take an hour to get from one side of Boone to the other, depending on what's happening at APP that day
COVID has (had?) pretty much taken care of that. Multiple times this summer, I've made it from the south side to King street hitting every light green, or only 1 stop at 321/105. Boone has been delightful to get around, kinda like it was back in the 90s.

Bit off from the original question, but what if the destination was farther west? Would folks still go FG?

The fact that the time is the same but the distance longer for FG, tells you that it is a better=faster drive.

We go to OH pretty often and it’s 30 miles closer to go thru Middlesboro Ky and get on int 75 at Corbin Ky than go thru Knoxville Tn but only about 3 minutes difference.

When I read this thread title I immediately thought that this is like asking someone if they would rather sandpaper the behind of an alligator while stuck in a phone booth, or eat a turd sandwich... neither!

My vote is Fancy Gap every time.

Fancy Gap

Is it weird that when towing I look forward to the tow up hills like Fancy Gap, and the Stairway to Heaven leaving Duffield?

I don’t really know why, but I get some adrenaline pumping, I’m watching my temps, I get a sense of relief about half way up when things are going good, I get excited when my old gasser is chugging along, I just enjoy watching the truck work and just getting it done. I don’t know why.

Towing to Kairos is the hardest pulls combined of anywhere I go wheeling, and the truck keeps impressing me.

Every time. In fact every time, towing or not.

Completely agree. When I was using the 2014 Chevy 1500 2wd I had dragging my Nissan up the grade (gross 14-15k) you just switch the dash to display trans temp, flip it to manual and hold 4th, lay in the pedal and rocket by all the weeny cars and big semis. Total fun and unexpected for such a small truck.

Try doing the same thing but with a 2002 model (equipped with the 4L60e). At this point you're hopping that 2nd gear and valve float gives you enough speed not to be run over by the semis with their flashers on :D
