Black Smoke

I have an 89 YJ, 258 with weber carb. I have alot of dark black exhaust smoke. Last time I had it out the engine lost some power like it fouled a plug. I changed the plugs and it runs fine now except for the black smoke. Got the power back. The plugs I took out were black and oily. Valve job time??? O2 sensor??

sounds like its running rich to me

White smoke, water or anti-freeze
Blue smoke, Burning oil
Black smoke, too much fuel(rich)

sounds like it is definitely running a shade rich.

Choke closed up
Trash in bowl not letting metering rod seal off
float too low or hung in the down position, or saturated

check the choke/other settings on your carb. something may be stuck etc etc

or if nothing else works....rebuild the carb. rebuild kit cost 20 bucks and it takes a couple hours if youve never done it before. but it'll be worth it.
