Sat I was towing my buddies new boat to the lake which is a 22ft. ski boat that weighs approx. 4500lbs, so with trailer I would say no more than 5000lbs. I could defiantly tell it was there especially going up hills and taking off, when I was on 440 my jeep started blowing smoke from underneath I pulled over and seen I had oil dripping from the tranny bellhousing so I assumed it was my rear main had blown out etc. I pulled up off the exit and unhooked the boat then let my jeep sit there and run for about 30 mins waiting on another truck. It didn't drop any oil sitting there and hasn't leaked any the past couple days. When I checked the oil it was at the full mark, I checked my oil today and it seems it is reading overfull a bit. And today it was losing power every hill I came to it was slowed by at least 5-10 mph had to press about half way down to maintain speed. Anyone got any ideas??

I spoke with my neighbor he is a mechanic for John Deer and he was saying that the oil may have gotten hot with such a load on it and a seal started leaking that normally wouldn't leak then stoped when I removed the load. So that may explain the fluid leakage but now I am concerned about the loss of power going up hills.

Having 2 much oil in the first place can cause that problem, among other much worse ones. Last time you change the oil did you over fill it.?

It is an auto but it was motor oil, I reached up under there and let the oil drip on my hand and rubbed it to make sure then pulled the tranny dipstick an double checked it. The tranny fluid is still somewhat red and smells slightly burnt.

What is the tow vehicle? If it is a 4.0 could be the rear main or valve cover leaking some as it gets real hot. A 4.0 pullling a 5000lb trailer will slow down going up hill. A clogged cat will also kill your power.

It is the 4.0, but what concerns me is that it is losing power going uphill with no load behind it. And it didn't start this until after this oil leaking situation.

If it's overfull, and you haven't added any oil, then it's probably gas getting in there. It would also explain the loss of power. Change the oil before it washes out your bearings, then run a compression check. You could have a couple of dead cylinders. Blown-out rings allowing fuel to wash down the walls and into the crankcase. If you have a carb and mechanical fuel pump, it could also be the culprit.

I checked my compression today and 4 cylinders had 150 and 2 had 145 so compression is god. Now I need to check my cat, it looks like I have 2 right off the manifold where my o2 sensors are then I have what looks like a resonator in front of my muffler is this correct do I have 2 cats or am I looking at it wrong??

The resonator you're talking of sounds like the flexible exhaust piping. Does it look like basket weaving? I think that's just there for flex.

I just replaced the upper cat on my sister's Nissan. She has two cats on her car. Her exhaust went like this:

Engine -> Exhaust manifold (bolt on) -> Catalytic converter (bolt on) -> Collector with normal pipe (bolt on) -> "Resonator"/Basket weave flexy thingy -> Pipe -> Catalytic converter -> tail pipe

Her car has 4 O2 sensors. Two in the manifold, 2 in the upper cat on the outlet side.

It's not the flexy thing. It goes like this.

Engine-> Exhaust Manifold-> Two Downpipes-> O2 Sensor on each pipe-> Cat on each pipe-> Y's into one pipe-> bends under body then a small round (mini muffler or cat) -> then Muffler

Definitely has two cats from the way you describe it. Take it to meineke am have them check it. They checked my o2s and the temp of the cat and determined my cat was the culprit. No charge for the diagnosis. This was in kannapolis. May not be the same at all locations.

Ok, new problem after I changed my oil and was on the way to work my oil filter gasket blew out and all my oil immediately blew out. Luckily caught it in time and shut down the engine but what would make this happen I have heard of to much pressure in the oil but not sure??

Okay, i know this sounds simple but sometimes the gasket on the old oil filter wont come off the block and it will seal with two gaskets until the pressure pushes one over a tad. This exact thing happened to a teachers car at the tech center and it was because a student didn't notice the old gasket didn't come off.
