Coincidental with the other thread.

We were at Slackvance today getting out of the weather and saw an optima blue top deep cycle for $118. It had about 1000 cranking amps and 800 or so cca, IIRC. I was just wondering if there was any adverse affects to running these inplace of a red or yellow top? What does the "marine" denotation change in the battery? Thanks, Josh

I called Exide a while back.. the marine batteries, according to them, are made for long, slow discharges that take the battery to what is considered "dead", and then charged back up slowly.

Red's are made for vehicles.

Optima's Yellow Top and Blue Tops are IDENTICAL on the inside...the only difference is the color on the outside, and the Blue Tops have a second set of posts on the top which are handy for accessories...

I bought Blue Top...but I went with a ProComp Blue Top...almost identical rating to the Optima, and it's run about 18 months so far with no problems, and a LOT of crap hooked up to it...

just be careful...as there is a 34M Blue Top and a D34M...you want the Deep Cycle (D34M)...

Greg are the Yellow and blue all Identical as you say but they make two different blues????
I don't get it.\
How can they be Identical but different.

When I called Optima they said forget the color and just get the one that connects like you need.
If that is correct why do the Yellow and blue cost so much more like 30-40$

there is the BlueTop D34M which is a deep cycle battery...identical to the YellowTop...

the "normal" 34M is a BlueTop that is sold as a marine battery, but is not deep cycle...

the red is a starter battery (normal vehicle battery)...the yellow and blue are deep cycle, which is why they cost more (yes, there is the "normal" blue top I just mentioned above, too)...

Optima will not warranty a red top that has been connected to a winch...

the warranty on the yellow and blue tops is 18 months, and on the red tops is somewhere around 6 years...
