guys, just picked up an old 16' jon boat with 9.8hp Merc for me and my fishing buddies to use. got it from my neighbor and hes had it at LKN forever and it apparently never was registered, since according to him, when it was purchased anything under 10hp didnt need to be registered. that, and the fact that it never really needed registration since it never left a teeny cove. I want to drag this thing around the world, and need to make it legal. Ive looked around on the NCWildlife site about this and before I call them, I would like to know whats the best way to play my cards 'right'. I can get a bill of sale, no issue, but whats my best approach. its probably a 70s model Sears unit, but the numbers on it dont mean anything in the searches Ive done. I cant prove that I or the seller didnt steal it, thats my issue.

My dad passed away in '06. Last year, mom and I finally got around to selling his bass boat. It was an '86 model, and didn't have a title -- wasn't required back in the 80's, but is required now. We had to get a title before selling it...buyer couldn't get one after the fact. You need to get the seller to handle it.

Local boat dealer helped us out...knew all the answers, they deal with that kind of stuff all the time. (and no charge for helping with the title and registration, just had to pay the state fees).

The book I have says you must register a motorized boat, & apply for title. You need a "notarized"bill of sale, & perhaps a vessel registration title application. That should provide the information you need. Also need the hull number, & maybe engine #. 1-800-nc vessel 1-800-628-3773. I don't believe they are to strict, on something that old. lol

My best recommendation would be to call the NC WRC main office tomorrow and tell them the full story. I have been very surprised at how helpful they are and how easy they are to work with. They are nothing like your local DMV IMHO.

I suspect the notarized bill of sale will suffice. There is a bill of sale form that you can print from the NC WRC website. I'd suggest using it just because it will be familiar to everyone in their office.
