ok so heres the deal, i bought a 3inch body lift for my 1987 jeep wrangler yj. well i put it on the back no problem, then realized that instead of lifting my jeep it actually lowered it. i then realized that my leaf springs go under my axcel instead of over like it needs to in order to lift it. well no big deal on the back i can always just switch them. but on the front there is stabilizers between my leafspring and axcel. wat am i supposed to do in order to use a body lift there?? any one?? please help. email is tjw1207@live.com
Thanks!!

sounds like you got lift blocks, not a body lift. It might help if you post pics of the 'body lift'. Also, why do you want to lift the YJ? Depending on your reasons, it might be better to get a spring lift instead of a body lift.

yea they are lift blocks, but i didnt know there was a difference between a body lift. this is my first car lol still learning all this. well i just wanted to be able to fit my 31x10.5 mud rovers under it which i cant do with out the lift. i want a suspension lift but being 16 its hard to save enough money for that. Thanks

A body lift goes between the body and frame. There will be less work in a body lift providing all the body bolts come out with out breaking. What kinda wheel-in are you doing or you just shooting for the look?

well i go trailing and muddin very rarely but every now and then i do. but mostly just for the look i dont go on any serious off roadin, i have made it through all the trails with it stock. just wantin to have it be a little bit taller to fit bigger tires

I run 31 rovers on my YJ with just a 2 inch lift shackle. There is plenty of clearance.

Sounds like a shackle lift will get you where you need to be. You might even talk some of these guys into getting you a pic and some dimensions so you can make some if you want to go low budget. Check the for sale section there are always springs, shackles & body lifts for sale.

i have never even heard of shackle lifts?? i have only heard of body suspension, and well i guess a lift block. so suspension is the best but most expensive? and how does a shackle lift work??

body lift = spacers between frame and body. Usually cheap, but in heights over ~2" or so they can cause problems related to extra stress on teh body mounts. Also can be a pain because you need to address things that mount between body/frame, such as fuel filler, possibly fuel or brake lines, electrical harnesses, steering shaft, fan/fan shroud...

lift blocks = spacers between axle and leaf spring. As you found, only works to lift vehicles with spring-over axle (SOA).
Suspension lift = taller springs, leafs with more arch. CAn be simple for small lifts, but larger lifts you'll need to look at steering geometry and driveshaft angles

Shackle lift = longer shackles. Shackles mount between the leaf spring and chassis, they pivot to allow the leaf spring to flatten/arch as thesuspension cycles. Because its only on one end of the leaf spring, it will only yield about 1/2 the extra height, ie if you get shackles that are 2" longer than stock, it will give only ~1" lift. It will rotate the normal position of the axle, ie the pinion angle will change, should look at driveline angles. If you go too big on the front, rotating the axle like this will cause bad steering (your caster measurment will be out of whack).

Another way to fit larger tires is to simply cut the fenders. I think on a YJ, you can even raise the flares to hide a hack job if necessary.

Now where's those pics of the lift, lowering blocks :flipoff2:

oh, and how can I forget...with lift blocks on a soft springed vehicle (say XJ for example), they can amplify leaf spring wrap to the point where the spring breaks, destroys the rear pinion yoke and drops the driveshaft. Yeah, my only personal expereince with 2" blocks.

WOW! thanks so much every one you have been so helpful! i would post pictures but i have absolutely no idea how to do any of that on here. i am gonna deffinetly take the lift blocks back and try a suspension or body. idk yet depends on how much i can save. Thanks again!!
