what are yalls opinions on body lifts? i was looking at maybe installing a 1 to 2 inch on my yj but im not sure if i want to, ive been steering away from them for awhile but i need that little bit of clearance for cheap.
 
I am not a big fan of body lifts. My towburb has a 3 inch body lift (previous owner installed it) and I have not had any problems with it. I think if you only go a 1 or 2 inch (three max) you will be fine. I would suggest getting a good set and not a half ass set like hockey pucks or something. I think anything mor than 3 inchesand you are asking for troubles.
 
I'd go with 1" if thats all you need. Once you go bigger than that, the Jeep starts looking goofy spaced off the frame too much, wires/hoses/linkages are needing to be relocated, etc.
 
Until you get in the 3"+ range, the BL issues is purely subjective, IMO. Some folks think they look ugly, some don't. In either case, a 1"-2" BL is an inexpensive and generally easy way to get some more tire clearance.
 
I'm with above, 1-2" and it's not big deal. Go as small as you can.
If you want something specific (like 1.5") 4crawler Offroad will custom make a set for you fairly cheaply.

Or you can make them yourself, buy a 2.5" rod of UHMW plastic, use a chopsaw to cut the desired lengths of pucks, and drill press for holes. I think my 1" BL cost me $18 this way w/ Grade 8 HW.
 
IMO...BL's have are ok in a couple of instances. 1) you've already gone the suspension lift route and you need some more clearance, but don't feel likw dropping the coin on another lift or having to redo the driveline. 2) They do come in hand to make the engine more accessible.

Things to remember, it's illegal in most states to have a BL greater than 3". I'd also upgrade hardware because the new leverage and force on those bolts could/can/have caused sheering.

Belly clearance is a clear advantage of a body lift. You can raise your drivetrain up and out of the way. That's a bonus for a lot of people. As far as looks go I could care less. It's the function I'm interested in. Now if it were a mall crawler..nah, wouldn't do a body lift at all.

Body lifts raise the drivetrain? Amazing:fuck-you:. All you get is tire clearence which is 1/2 the additional tire size added. I have ran the 1-2" flavor, no issues.

;) Okay, I guess I'll have to be more precise. A clear advantage to a body lift is that it allows you to raise your drivetrain to gain more belly clearance. :flipoff2:
 
Thanks for the advice, im actually making my own body lift. bought the new stock poly bushings and having a friend that does rhino lining fill a cardboard tube with the lining and im goin to cut to the length i need. He has made body bushing for his nova and feet for his tow truck so they dont crush the concrete(the feet that come down and hold the whole weight of the truck so it doesnt move). and i think im gunna go with 2" so we will see how it works out. want to fit 37 under my yj got 35s right now

That's a pretty wild way of making the pucks.
Is that stuff really that hard when cured? I'd be worried about is squishing over time.
I bought a 1 foot, 2.5" rod of UHMW from Triad Plastics for < $10.
